I can't remember who posted it, but there are 3 patterns to the mystery boxes. Regardless of which pattern you are getting, it averages about 8 donuts per 1% increase, assuming you reinvest the 10 and 30 donut boxes into more mystery boxes. It is definitely not random, the only thing random is which of the 3 patterns you will get.
