It's no different than other items that cost donuts in my opinion. I realize there are freemium ways to get donuts (I started out that way). Also, I think the prices for the two best items (the characters) is very responsible.
FYI, Kindle users can get deals on coins for purchase. You can get $25 worth of coins for $20 which gets you both characters.
Back before donuts became "free", I'd earn iTunes credit by churning through questionnaires on "eRewards". This was easier when you could get actual iTunes cards there, but they stopped offering those.
They offer Game Stop cards, so I would just use the eRewards credit for Game Stop certificates and then buy iTunes cards there. Less efficient but it still worked.
Only negative: they limit you to one $25 certificate every 3 months. Not a huge deal - that means a boatload of donuts a year, and that's a lot - but it'd be better without the restrictions.
I'd been saving certificates for a boatload, but the "free donut rampage" that now exists means I no longer needed to do that, so I used 'em to buy a cheap Black Friday Nintendo DS! :p
I can get a new $25 certificate 1/1, so I'll probably buy an iTunes card and use it for the 2 characters.
Still not happy I "have to" do this, but at least it's no money out of pocket! :D
