I'd hang on to them for now as I suspect that a new event isn't that far away and it might have something that you consider a must have.

For 100 donuts, Akira comes with a nice building, has nice animations, and can make Bonsai trees.
Otto and the school bus are 120 donuts for a classic character with great animations.
I think there's another 100-donut character/building combo now too. Can't remember which one.
Those are the first two I generally recommend to people because they're a great deal. Beyond that, just get whatever makes you happy.
