This is an argument I am going to stay well out of ... as the Neutral Planet President in Futurama said "I have no strong feelings one way or the other".
On the surface it would seem to make logical sense to not make the episode tie-in items available again once the episode's window has closed, but only if you are in the USA. Elsewhere in the world, we don't get the episodes at the same time as the USA, so the items don't tie in to a current episode at the point they appear in the game in any case.
If newer players want the old items (and there are some I missed from previous events just because I didn't have any neighbours and/or spend enough hours playing, that I would love to get) then EA will find a way to make them available, so that they can make money out of them.
However, my feeling is that they will want to tie it in with something else, so as to avoid "older" players seeing "newer" players getting with little or no effort what took many hours of tapping and tasking previously ... as that would reduce the incentive for players to put in all that tapping and tasking during future special events.
When I visit my friends I like to look at well-organised, good looking Springfields ... and if they have the same stuff as I do, it can help to inspire how I might design my own SF if there are elements I am just not happy (or can't be arsed) with.
