Find a clear space in your town and play around with the hedges. They're actually pretty easy to do, just put them one above the other, but like bricks, so the lines don't match up. It's all just an optical illusion but its great hey. :) The hardest bit I found was working out the corners, but you'll get the hang of it. I've seen some pretty cool hedge pyramids in towns too. If you're still stuck you should be able to youtube a how-to. Heck there's probably even one in a thread here somewhere, buried under countless piles of.... err... great comments about the easter event... ;)

have a look through that thread stephmiller. It's an oldie but a goodie for 3D stuff, you'll pick up some great ideas and get a feel for how you can layer some of the different objects to get different effects.

It really comes down to time and patience. Since EA implemented the new "buying" system where your next object is laid out for you, it has actually become pretty easy to create those designs. Prior, when you bought your hedge/fence/etc, the next one would just pop up in the middle of the screen and XP would clutter your attempts to place the objects in the right spot. I made this design during in a feeder town whilst watching a 3 1/2 hour baseball game:

I've seen all kinds of awesome 3D designs in neighbor's towns and in the Showcase section on these forums.
