None of the above.
For me, it was almost entirely thanks to the handshake stacking glitch with Channel Six and Arnie Pye, and awesome faithful neighbors. I even had a dozen or so who were willing to do triple-tapping. Do the math. At $7500 per tap, over $22,000 per triple-tapping neighbor ...
A gift from heaven. Had nothing to do with "hard work" or strategy. Just good ol' Arnie and good neighbors.
A huge advantage over those players who came along too late to take part. :(
I was also lucky enough to make a ton of in game cash with the stacking glitches. But I'm also a grinder, I mean a really hard grinder. If you have the time (yeah right, who does?) set your characters on one hour tasks. Keep grinding and the money will come. Granted, this just doesn't work for a lot of people.
Early in my game, I was also keen to spend whatever doughnuts I could on multipliers, they really help!
Excellent points. And now that I have enough money ($20 million or so) I can set my characters on the visual tasks I like best regardless of task length. Duffman on his Segway for 6, the boys in purple wigs and Kirk protecting crops for 16, Chalmers in a dress for 10, Texan on mechanical bull for the same, Burns swimming for 4, and four Stonecutters singing at the table for 12. And lots more. Not needing to grind is a nice perk. :)
