This week has been nothing but metal for me as well. Fortunately, I can usually finish in 48 hours.
My typical strategy is that after I get my 5 donuts, I run metal, plastic, and glass to within 5-10 points of maxing it out. Then, I wait for all characters for that item to free up and mass produce the item. That can take me to nearly double some of the soft-maximums and gives me a head start for the next week. This doesn't have to be done immediately since I usually have 4-5 days before the rail yard tasks reset. That gives me time to finish up the event tasks, if any.
I do agree, though, that the same characters being used repeatedly for rail yard, Springfield Heights, and events tends to get cumbersome. With these expansions and additional recurring events, we're going to need a project planning add-on to the game!
