What's the Difference Between One Nerd versus Several Nerds?

I have no freaking idea how this update works. What I'm attempting to do is seek out castles exclusively, and send as many nerds as possible to attack at once. It seems a good number of my neighbors haven't updated yet, so I THINK I'm just attacking random towns, which is fine with me.
