Why do I have such terrible luck with mystery boxes??

I've been trying everything I can to increase my multiplier. Right now, it's at 216.45%. Every time I save up 6 donuts, I try for the box because that seems to be what everyone says to do. Very annoyi...

What did you guys do with all your Lard Lads?? I got like 4 or 5 more of them just today. I know they generate income like any other building, so it pays to keep them out - but I'm running out of room and don't want to buy new land for them (since they don't look good, seeing as how there're so many)!
