Yup! It's been doing this to me for ages, I just couldn't figure how to communicate it as clearly as you @1-Graham-S.
I'd open my game up in the morning and get a bonut spin & XP bar set to zero and I thought: "Wow! free stuff, the elves must've had enough of making shoes and they've been in my game earning xp while I sleep."
Then I went through a spate of Bart attacks so decided to sync the game regularly and I noticed the same thing occurred when I did this, but now that I sync before I shut down I don't get the morning bonuts anymore.
I started to suspect then that it wasn't free stuff after all but actually Bart pickpocketing me without actually booting me out.
Sure enough, I stopped using the sky finger & cleared my town by a; 4 taps, sync, rinse, repeat method and got about twice the haul of donuts than I had been getting before, but it did take about an hour to do this way.
As you said, there's a discrepancy between the rate that the cash drops in compared to the XP, but I can't help but suspect it's deliberate. If it was the coding that couldn't handle the totals then the cash would be affected even worse as those amounts are an order of magnitude higher than the XP.
I'm currently waiting for my xp collider to run out, cos I was going to check whether that would cure the issue, if nothing else it should speed up the clearing up of all the crap icons off the screen.
I'll report back on my investigations, when I know more.
