I'm sorry, but I will have to correct you there. The UK as you said, is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. However the UK is not a country, it is a sovereign state. The counties include England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
So the UK is a union between 4 countries, represented by one government.
