Leg checks need their own input in UFC 6
One thing UFC 6 really needs to improve is the leg check system.
Right now, holding R2 + L2 does way too much. It blocks body punches, body kicks, body teeps, body spinning kicks, body roundhouses, helps defend takedowns, and also checks leg kicks.
The problem with that is it removes a lot of the depth from kickboxing range.
In real striking, there are three levels to worry about: legs, body, and head. But in UFC 6, the defensive system kind of turns it into a two-level game. You hold R2 to block high, and you hold R2 + L2 to protect almost everything below the head.
That means leg kicks and body attacks are not as distinct as they should be. If someone can defend body shots and check leg kicks with the exact same input, then the attacker loses a lot of the mind games that should exist at kickboxing range.
A lot of players have been asking for leg checks to have their own input since UFC 5, and I think UFC 6 really needs to implement something like that.
One idea would be to make leg checks timing-based. Instead of holding R2 + L2 and automatically being ready to check, you would have to tap R2 + L2 at the right time to check the leg kick. Holding R2 + L2 could still block body shots and help with takedown defense, but checking leg kicks would require actual timing.
That would make the stand-up game way deeper. If I throw a leg kick and my opponent is only blocking the body but does not time the check, the leg kick should land. Then next time, if he starts expecting the leg kick and tries to time the check, I could feint or switch it up and throw a body roundhouse instead. Now he has to worry about the legs and the body separately, which opens up the head too.
That is how it should feel. The fight becomes a real three-level game again.
Another possible option would be to give leg checks a separate held input, like R2 + L2 + L1. In that setup, R2 blocks the head, R2 + L2 blocks body shots and helps deny takedowns, and R2 + L2 + L1 specifically protects/checks leg kicks.
I am not saying that exact input has to be the final answer. I am just saying leg checks need to be separated from regular body blocking somehow.
Right now, one defensive input covers too many things. It makes body kicks and leg kicks less threatening than they should be, and it takes away from the strategy of striking at different levels.
Leg kicks should force the defender to make a specific defensive read. Body kicks should force a different read. Head kicks should force another read. That is what makes kickboxing range feel dangerous and tactical.
EA should seriously consider giving leg checks their own input or making them more timing-based. This would make striking more skill-based, more realistic, and more rewarding for players who actually set up their attacks.
