cant complete defending submissions bug

hi im playing ea sports UFC, im completely stuck on the challenges ground challenges. defending submissions 1 . it say Push R in any direction. but the opponent is just lying there and he does nothing, i cant defend him since hes completely idle. so the 1 minute run out and i get white belt and i cant continue on with the challenges. the opponent is joe adams i think, im controlling BJ pen
