Game crashes after stage load

Quest 3 + RTX 4090.

Right after stage load game crashes to desktop without any messages. No settings altered.

  • Hey there,

Thank you all for reporting your crashes. The team is currently investigating this issue. Meanwhile, you can disable the OpenXR toolkit by using the OpenXR app in Windows as a workaround.

You can disable the OpenXR Toolkit with incompatible applications as shown in the image, but we also recommend you to tick the option at the top "Disable the OpenXR Toolkit"

We will update this thread as soon as we have more information.

My game crashes with SteamVR (Steamlink). Sometimes I can maybe drive a stage or two, but some stages just crash (haven't tried that many, but Finland seems to be crashing a lot). This doesn't hapeen with Airlink.I don't have OpenXR Toolkit installed.

2080 Super, 5800x3d. Usually Airlink, but this problem is with Steamlink which works better when it works. That just isn't very often.

Also the more stages I play the worse the performance gets with Airlink too.

Good job on no major stutters when entering places with buildings etc. That hasn't worked for me in DR2.0 or with this game on UEVR.

  • It seems what is causing the OpenXR toolkit related game crashes is OpenXR toolkit's foveated rendering option (it was the same when running WRC in UEVR). I have disabled the foveated rendering options in the toolkit via a registry edit. The game runs much more stable now, with the toolkit in use. Something worth investigating?

OpenXR toolkit and it's options are one of the few things to make WRC acceptably, so just telling everyone to shut it off is not a long term solution.

So my game crashes even though I don't have or use VR. I never see a choice of how to start the program, VR or not, like usual, so I'm guessing if I don't have a VR headset connected it starts in NON VR mode. Still crashes every time two or three minutes into a stage. This on a PC that's been running EA WRC fine since day one. I even reinstalled Windows 11 fresh and installed just Steam/EA WRC and my wheel driver and Simhub and it does the same thing.

One interesting fact, I used to run around 100 FPS with my setup, MSI Z490 MAG Tomahawk, i7-10700, 32GB of DDR4 3733, 3070, and NOW it runs at 140-150 FPS until it crashes.

So seeing as I don't use VR, does this OpenXR fix work for me, too? The PC currently doesn't show OpenXR, at least I can't search for it and find it. Do I install it and disable it, or is this "FIX" not going to work for my NON VR setup?

  • yesterday there was the problem that every upscaler causes to a game crash… without upscaler everything was fine.

Im using a pico 4 with openxr and a rtx3089

  • On steam do a right click  on  WRC game and then: Properties - General - Launch options  ( and add following to there )    -force -dx11
The game don´t crash anymore BUT unfortunately this reduce fps a bit.

REALLY hope that developers optimize final VR update well. In Dirt 2.0 I can set all up to max and still get constant 90 fps and very good visual graphics. But on EA WRC it´s only way to play this game on VR somehow is usingOpenXR toolkit but game have bugs for this. Far far far away from Dirt 2.0 and other games in VR situation.

    My hardware:

    I7 14700F
    RTX 4080 Super
    32 GB RAM

    Quest 3 VR

  • Just wanted to drop by to mention that VR experience was a head-banging experience until I found this thread!

With OpenXR and DX12 enabled, everything was black on the headset in menus and CTD after entering stage

With OpenXR disabled and D12 enabled, I could look into the menus in the headset, but would have regular freezes (rendering freeze) in the headset upon entering stage
With OpenXR disabled and forced DX11, things are much better.

Still, this reports are from months ago and no change in the horizon? This worries me as it looks like an abandoned old game instead of looking like a state-of-the-art new version of the game.  I would expect little support for older games, but having the same errors reported over and over again for months without any improvement or fix seems like the wrong approach.

    Thanks to those providing support!

  • i solved the problem by starting with directx 11 steam launch options „-force -dx11“

Guys, DX11 isn't really an acceptable solution. It gets like 50% worse frame rates than DX12.

Also, y'all need to stop calling "Open XR Toolkit"  by "Open XR". Learn the difference plz thanks. Dev's job is difficult enough without y'all still trying to run deprecated 3rd party software that's been known to crash DX12 apps for months now.
