VR crashes with Varjo Aero

Ok, looks like no WRC VR soup for me for now.

Game crashes with Varjo set to handle OpenXR after the first screen where it's asking if I'd like to play in VR. With SteamVR set to be OpenXR game manages to start, with horrible stutters when turning head, and crashes when I try to start a time trial. In both cases the crash is silent, with no pop-up window messages, simply goes back to Steam.

AMD 5900X, 64G RAM, and a 4090.

Both DR and RD2 work fine as they used to; so hopefully it's not a problem with my setup.

Update: Managed to get it working in SteamVR OpenXR. Horrible stutters when turning head but otherwise it runs, although doesn't look very good. I think disabling the OpenXR Toolkit globally is what did the trick. It still crashes when Varjo Base is set as the OpenXR runtime which is where I'd like it to actually work, as I'm guessing having SteamVR in the middle is the cause of the very bad stutters when turning head.

@mulubapWRC crashes the same way as with the 4.2, plus the Red/Blue tool for 4.2 doesn't work with 4.3.

Update: Red/Blue tool is now shipped with the VB, in the directory varjo-composer (or something like that), inside Varjo's program files folder, so at least that one's not a problem. WRC still crashes with 4.3 tho :D

  • Yup, game crashes after it asks to switch to VR. After enabling it - instant crash.

What is worse, the same seems to happen with older Varjo Base version as well (3.10.3.25). Before it worked like @DKay114 described.

    Currently completely unplayable!

  • I also cannot get it to launch after selecting 'Use VR' on the EA WRC splash screen even with Varjo Base 3.10.3.25 using the previous workarounds. The latest Varjo Base 4.3 also does not work. I cannot play this game in VR with my Varjo Aero HMD.

Varjo Aero finally works with newest WRC  patch.

I managed to get it work:
    - disable openxr toolkit  wrc and whole app

    - in varjo base only open vr is enabled

    - in game upscaler is off

picture is quite dark even brigthness is 100% and if I hit something in another eye flashes something dark.

  • Running the game through SteamVR negatively affects the performance

Could we get OpenXR naively to work again? Apparently it did prior to 1.9
