HAGS causes severe stutter; AMD overlay temporarily fixes it

System Information:

  • GPU: 9070 xt
  • CPU: ryzen 5 9600x
  • Driver Version: 25.10.2
  • Windows Version: Windows 11
  • Game: Apex Legends on Steam

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Ensure "Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling" is ON in Windows Graphics Settings.
  2. Launch Apex Legends
  3. Observe severe sluggishness in the firing range, despite a high FPS counter.

Unique Diagnostic Clue:
Bringing up the AMD Performance Overlay (Ctrl+Shift+O) immediately and consistently makes the game feel smooth again, even though the FPS counter remains the same. Removing the overlay brings the stutter back. This proves the issue is frametime-related, not FPS-related.

Solution Found:
Disabling "Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling" in Windows Graphics Settings and restarting the PC completely resolved the issue.

Request:
Please investigate the interaction between Apex Legends, Windows HAGS, and AMD drivers. This appears to be a significant scheduling conflict.

  • Bumping this issue. It has been 18 days with no response. This is a significant bug affecting gameplay on modern AMD systems. I have confirmed it is a frametime pacing issue related to Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling. Please provide an update or escalate this to the development team.
