Bringing up chat to type locks game

What happens is that when I press the key to open the chat box, to type or switch between channels, the game locks, and i am unable to use my cursor. I cannot exit the chat screen, i cannot type, ESC doesn't work. Nothing works. So i have to quit the game and restart to "fix".
