Entering the interview without opening the coach info card should let you into the interview as well. Can you try that and let me know if it works or not? This might be what you're doing already. I just don't play FM so not sure if what I'm suggesting is the same as what you mentioned in your update.
I have also experienced this same game crashing bug. And I also found out that I can't hire coaches or scouts during the first summer period when starting a new franchise mode with an expansion team.
