Nametags visible despite being turned off

I usually play with other players’ name tags turned off, but they sometimes reappear even though the setting still shows as disabled.

If I toggle the setting on, exit the menu, then go back in and turn it off again, it temporarily fixes the issue — but before long, the name tags start showing again.
