How is it possible for an opponent to win a GAC match when they lose a battle and I did not? Either this user is cheating or banners are being incorrectly awarded. This is costing me crystals.

Whether it's option 1,2 (or the likely) 3. I think it would be a good idea to learn how banners work. 100s of times a week (I would guess) players win matches after losing more times; I've done it this season myself.
You're missing out on a large part of the strategy that is 'banner pinching'. Some of the more efficient 'banner pinchers' have supernatural skills!
