I do use mods and CC but it all worked fine previously and is all up to date with latest updates/patches etc. I'll try and double check in a different save to see if it is exactly the same as I don't...

Naomsx I split your post into it's own thread then. It doesn't sound like the same issue the other user was having. It does sounds to a certain extent the same as the one above but bug reports really need to be tested on vanilla/no mods saves. They get outdated with patches.
Please move your mods folder to the desktop, delete Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > localthumbcache, repair your game and then try again on a backup of your save to see of you can duplicate the issue on a game with no mods.
Did all the suggested above and the game worked again as normal. It was slightly glitchy at first but seems to be okay so far. Added mods back in too and is still fine. I think game repair solved this issue!
