[FR] Items in Fridges, Bookshelves & Toy boxes Disappear on R-Residential

Hello!

I don't know what are the rules against that, but I wanted to open this topic as this issue was never solved, and is not currently listed on the new list of compiled issues. I also have additional information to bring about the root cause of that issue.

As this bug can have a lot of impact for people playing with rentals and losing stuff they bought/obtained through gameplay, I think that it should be solved. It also clutters lot with un-necessary objects that can't be accessed or deleted, bloating save-files (and we all know that's not good now).

The original topic

To make it short: some items have the ability to contain stuff in their own inventory, with different ways of functioning:

  • Fridges, Bookshelves and Toy boxes can contain items, and their inventory is shared across the lot for all items of the same type.
  • Keepsake boxes can contain items, and their inventory is specific to the item, not shared with others.

In the case you have items in shared inventories (Fridges, Bookshelves and Toy boxes) in a residential rental unit, and you access the build mode for the whole rental (from the Manage Worlds screen), it deletes all the items that were contained in those inventories. Items tied to specific items (like in keepsake boxes) are not affected.

But that's where I discovered some new stuff: the item is technically not deleted. In the way the plex system works (it's the system that allow having multiple units in one lot, used by residential rentals), it's that it creates multiple zones, one for each unit. But all the objects on the lot are stored on the Zone Object Data from the first unit.

In order to know what inventory object belongs to which unit, it uses a inventory_plex_id attribute associated to each of those objects (it's not the case for regular objects, I think the fact they are positioned within a room belonging to the unit is enough, and stored items are just stored at very weird coordinates).

When editing a residential rental in build mode without selecting a unit, the items stored are not deleted, their inventory_plex_id attribute is just set to 0 like any regular object.

Because of that, when loading the unit, it's not possible to know that the items belongs to this unit as it doesn't have an id anymore.

NennaRC  Yep, that can happen.  It's not a bug, just the way the game works.  Containers such as bookshelves, and toy boxes work differently depending on where they are in a residential rental.  If you place something in any type of container that is located in a shared space, it will usually disappear when you leave and return to the lot.  What you have to do is place a container in each apartment and store whatever it is there instead of using a container in shared space.  Then when you access the container that is in shared space, you will see the contents of the one in the apartment of the sim you are playing.   All containers work this way.  That includes toy boxes, bookshelves, fridges, and any other object that allows you to store anything in them like flower and EBN cure workstations and a few other things.

    Hope this helps.

I do indeed have all bookshelves and toyboxes in each apartment but books and toys still disappear. I don't have any bookshelves or toyboxes in shared areas. I have never had them in shared spaces either. They were placed in each apartment from start when I built the house.

NennaRC  Toys and books will go missing is if you have sims with certain traits that visit the household and "steal" things.  Klepo traited sims could do it but generally don't steal things like that though (they'd steal the entire bookcase or toy box, not the contents).  Childish sims will play with toys and not put them away or if they do, they put them in their own inventory or carry them out of the apartment.   Books can end up in chest containers if the chest container is closer than a bookcase or if you've placed one of the small book group bookshelves on a surface where sims seem to get a route block when putting books away.  Then the sims go into the sim inventory of the sim trying to put them away so if the sim is a visitor, the book disappears from the lot.  If you have a visitor sim reading or playing with a toy when you save and quit, the books and toys can end up in the sim's inventory when you reload.  The sim may or may not pull the item out and continue using it.  If they don't then the item is gone.

    Hope this helps.

It’s not about one or another book/toy getting stolen. When I have built and furnished a house and moved in a household I usually fill toyboxes and bookshelves with almost all available books and toys by letting them buy them. The toys and books are in there as long as I play the game but after quitting the game and starting again later, bookshelves and toyboxes are empty and this happens on residential rental lots, not normal residential lots. As mentioned, these boxes and shelves are not placed in shared spaces. The items are not stolen, every item disappears. My sims don’t read every book in my filled bookshelves and have trouble putting them back or place them elsewhere. There are too many books and toys for that to empty all.

Is there still an ongoing investigation for players who experience books purchased to put in bookcases and foods being made to store in refrigerators go missing? I know they discovered their things were going into other storage devices, but what about those who have no other storage devices in their game? These items instead just disappear.

This only happens on For Rent rental properties and no where else. Some have reported that even leaving their rental unit to go to another lot and come back have found triggered this as well. For my sims it is when they go to bed and get up the next day.

Are others still experiencing this bug?? I would love to start reintroducing Rental properties in my game again, but don't want to go through the process of creating such a lot only to find it is still bugged.

Thank you for any feedback and assistance to this matter.

    Hi wasikm007

I merged your post with the bug report.

Make sure to click on upvote.

Please be also aware that there's an issue with mods causing similar so if you do have any, test without them.

Thank you so very much Crinrict. When I had witnessed these bugs (When I first purchased and started playing with For Rent), I was not using any form of Mods, so I knew that was not the issue back then. It was only just within these past weeks that I am beginning to dabble with using Custom Content. I was hoping this was addressed, but hopefully it will soon.

It's happening to me. but my toy box and pet toys are in my own rental unit, not a shared space.
