Blog Post
Posted this in my guild, gonna post it here too. I know there are changes being made to datacrons, but here is my take on them in general:
They should not be available as anything more than stat boosts for teams, or possibly low-level ability boosts by class. Nothing absurdly game-changing like damage immunity to start the match or a highly accelerated ultimate.
There should be no character, alignment, or faction boosts. These should be limited to the whole team or at the very most a class boost. I recognzie that DCs can be used to make older, less-useful characters relevant again, but it's kind of subjective on who is "relevant," especially at different levels in the game. This is the only time, if done right, to give characters a boost at an individual level.
Ditch the rotating schedule. Make them permanent like mods. Basically, make them like mods for the entire team. There can be a lot of fun in this, finding and rerolling a cron to fit a team perfectly.
I know some people like datacrons, but putting aside the idea of them being an absurd concept as they currently are (is MLB going to let a player use roids and bring in the fences for an entire team each month? lol), they have broken the game sooooooo many times and caused a lot of headaches for a lot of people. There are literally billions of character combinations in a five-person squad, so even with automation and forecasting, it's highly unlikely that all combinations can be tested with each datacron. Things are going to break when all possible scenarios can't be tested. There are always going to be fringe examples, but things like the BB/Vader bug and now Rex's FDC have shown us time and time again that it's a dangerous system that continues to be problematic.
Long winded, SNS.
