I’m reserving judgement, but it does seem like a lot of new marquee/episode characters will be required. Effectively paywalling higher raid scores and era battles and the new DCs and all of the associated rewards/benefits is likely to turn off many more players. I guess CG has done the math$..?

Same here. I'll wait until the raid is actually released, or at least until we have more infor on what it involves and what other toons are required. But I also understand your frustration. It's bad enough that we have to farm a bunch of completely different toons every couple of months when a new raid is released, we're also being pushed more and more into focusing on the very latest toons instead of having a generally strong roster. I can eventually get the new BB team to (low, at best mid) relic levels, once they all become farmable of course. But focusing on a bunch of new DS Clones or Vanguard Jedi? Sorry, but I can only focus on so many things at one time. And we have faux-ABs that require said very latest toons, with those faux-ABs only lasting three or so months. If it turns out the raid also requires older but commonly geared/reliced toons, like maybe 501st, I would be very pleasantly surprised, but until then my current feelings revolve around dread and frustration. I'm not even upset at the "LV cannot be used in this raid" announcement. Honestly, the only good thing I got from this post is that the Era battles will at least run alongside ABs. Can you imagine if they were rotating them? I have nothing against rewarding paying players. Having an advantage in GAC/TW/TB? Fine. Having access to a new monthly/biweekly/whatever event? Very well, as long as it is staying. Having a few (a few, not numerous) feats in Conquest require the latest toons? I can live with that. But having a raid require so many of the newest releases, therefore putting much more pressure on players if they want to maintain the same rewards, nevermind getting better ones? Creating temporary events that require the newest releases at what I for now can only assume are high investment levels? For crying out loud.
Also, apropos of nothing, but can someone please finally fix this burning trashheap of a forum? Issues with loging in, constantly changing user images, issues with posting, etc. Aside from that, these last few days, when I read comments, especially in a news post, and I click on Show More, instead of revealing more messages, they replace the ones that were already visible and if I wanted to go back and look at a previous comment, I have to click on the Show More on the upper section several times. Even with the older forums it was much easier, comments were divided into pages, but at least that way you had a rough idea on which page a comment was and you could go there in one click. And, while I was writing this (the commentary on the raid, that is), I scrolled up to look at some of the announcement. Then when I scrolled down, my draft was gone, so I had to write this all over again. I for one would much rather have a plain, boring, but functioning forum, than an aesthetically good but otherwise sloppy one.
