Not sure if this helps anyone, and I wish I took screen shots, but I didn't do anything with my Google Play account.  I just logged into the game on my android tablet as a guest, there was a button asking if I had an account, I clicked it and then at it gave me an option to connect via Google Play or my EA account.  I chose the EA account, entered my email and the code it sent me, and now I'm in.  Restarted the game and no issue getting in.
