Guildmate found a workaround.
Launch the game, choose play as guest then go to the have an account button and choose link account instead of sign into Google play. It'll do the email code thing and let you in

Even that seems to be hit or miss

This seems to only work if people have the EA account linked. A lot of people, including myself, have not found this solution viable and just get another error code

There is a big void in my life right now.

Link account only works if you have an EA Account. No good for Google Play account holders

Why wouldn't you have linked the Google Play account to an EA account?
Have you really not been getting the free Webstore stuff for the last 18 months?

It should work that is exactly how I got into the game. Granted it might be different if you're using those crappy iphones. The thing is you have to leave Google play and use ea connect to get into the game. So if you get the screen where Google play is you cancel that then you hit play as guest. Once the new game is started you go to the settings button top left hand corner. Hit the connect button and then choose the ea connect. You'll be asked to get a login code via text or email. Punch that code in and it should take you to your game.

That doesn't always work, if you have multiple EA accounts linked to different Heroes accounts. In my case, the game is locked to the secondary EA account, and I can't unlink it. Logging through Guest/Importing the other account results in a different error.

It don't work. The progress i made with Google Play account did not merge at all and it just create a single New account.
