I'm going to try the above steps again with the additional step of restarting my phone before going into the game... I'll edit my post if it works or not...

Edit: Details on app store showing Google play services was not updated even though I had hit it for an update prior. So, I shouldn't have to uninstall again. Just going to restart my phone first.

Edit: ^ Still getting connection error
