Re: Origin Play Button Greyed Out - Battlefield 2042

...same issue with Battlefield 1 for some time now.

Sometimes it helped to disable ingame-overlays, but not anymore as it seems.

Only secure way is to start via the EA Desktop (not Origin).

But it is then much harder to join friends on servers (as the in-game joining feature was always broken, and in EA Desktop there seems not be no option to join others, unlike Origin).

Hey @FettenDiddi @MrMolchy, I have moved your thread to a more appropriate board for this issue, the Origin board. 🙂

It's unfortunate to hear that you're having these issues.

What are the troubleshooting steps that you've tried already to try to fix the issues, if any?

  • What I have tried:

    - Repair game

    - Reinstall Origin

    - Reinstall security  Eye something

    - Using EA Play but it is not in state to be used long term so removed it

    Possible issue:
I have initially bought the game via Steam and made a refund. Then bought it on Origin as I do not like double luncher running just to lunch the game.
Is it possible there is some kind of left over link with steam which masses with Play button in Origin.

@MrMolchy, alright, thanks for the extra info.

Yeah, you're right. It is indeed possible that your previous purchase via Steam (because it needs to link via Origin) has indeed messed with something, what now results in the game being blocked from being launched via Origin itself.

The best way you can verify this, is by contacting our live support. They should be able to take a look at your EA account and see the details of potentially leftover Steam items.

You can contact them via https://help.ea.com/contact-us, https://Twitter.com/EAHelp, https://Facebook.com/EAHelpHub.

Direct (real-time) live chat is the best option: https://bit.ly/EAChatSupport.
If you don't see this option, you might have to change the country on EA Help to either the UK or the US.
  • Having both Origin and EA Desktop installed (the later one because of the Xbox Gamepass), these installations seem to mess up each other.

EA Desktop seems to bring some services with it that are running already at Windows start-up, preventing Origin from starting BF1 successfully most of the times.

Doesn't matter, EA Desktop Beta "workaround" works.

Don't know about problems with BF2042, i can't play that anymore anyway, and I don't care about that one at alle anymore.

    It's totally unpredictable.
    Yesterday, it worked from Origin.
Today, it's greyed-out right after system start in Origin.
When I did start anything else (EA Desktop, other Origin-based games) it won't work, that's 100% predictable then (greyed-out immediately or after first try).
Problems started some months ago, never happened before BF2042 was "launched".

And yes, no problem so far using the EA Desktop to start-up BF1, but this is still a beta and features are missing/non-working, especially trying to join friends what almost never works in-game in BF1 or BFV ("game session doesn't exist", but that's another issue that was never fixed, we just get used to it...)

@FettenDiddi, do you have an EA game via Steam aswell by any chance, and your EA account linked to a Steam account?
  • @EA_Leeuw
    Yes, some few games linked.
But I don't start Steam if I dont need it, so it would be strange it Steam is responsible here.
And as said, until 3 months ago: no problem at all, everything started fine all the time.
  • I got same problem form bought game. I played only free weekend on steam, but got same issues. Can't open game because play button is greyed out. When i try launch game by .exe file i got message about END FREE TRIAL VERSION, BUY THE GAME.

Please, help, i can't fix it, and support can't help me, says everything is OK.

    Hey @PanieKierowniku,

Did you make use of a free trial weekend to play the game, and did you eventually also buy the game standalone? If so, via Origin/EA app, Steam or Epic?

@PanieKierowniku, alright, thanks for the info. And the free trial, how did you claim this one exactly? Via Origin, or Steam?
