Re: My opinion on BFN

I'll speak from the heart here, as someone who has logged over 225 hours into Garden Warfare 2.

Do I hate BFN? That day will come when Zomboss love plants. I'm always willing to look past flaws of any game to find the positives and fun. Consider this post something of constructive criticism of the game, echoing the thoughts of the original post and the ones who have commented.

Without repeating much of what was said in prior posts, I think BFN has potential that is missing in the overall execution. What I mean by this is that BFN is in a franchise that is bursting with creativity! It's why I am such a die-hard PvZ fan- they never fail to come up with fresh and at times wacky ideas that always put a smile on my face, and continue to impress me. And I won't lie when I say BFN continues this. A PvZ game without charm, humor, and a complete disregard for real world logic is the type of PvZ I adore.

Remember when everyone thought Garden Warfare was such a stupid idea upon reveal? And it went on to become a landmark of how to make a more family friendly shooter. The original game brought in the innovation of it's renditions of characters with different sorts of primary weapons. I speak, of course, of the Variants. It gave you a different character to play as that fit in the same class as the base character. Say you love the Foot Soldier, but wish that he was more tailored to sniping. Boom! Go pick the Camo Ranger! This allowed for near limitless playstyles, increasing as more Variants and abilities were added. And despite a shallow lineup of modes at launch, DLC expanded it to make GW a game one could spend tons of hours in.

And GW2 perfected it all, in my eyes. Great new classes, new variants for the existing classes, rewarding loyal players by letting your transfer your Variants from the first game to 2, ample single player content, a hub for you and friends to explore, and locales that encourage you to play long term to reach the ultimate challenges, and greatest rewards. It was a game for players, a game for gamers, and one where there was never not something to do. I've sunk more hours into it then any game ever- and what it has is a testament to such.

Battle for Neighborville, however, feels like a reboot of the series, one it did not need. All they needed to do originally was to expand upon with GW 2 did in this game, just like GW 2 expanded upon GW. I'm always one for branching out and trying new things, but not when so much of what made a foundation for your past shooters is gone. Variants? Gone. And that really hurts me on a personal level, when that technically gives us a far smaller roster of characters than in GW 2, and even in GW 1. Overhauls have been given to many characters, so of which I like (Rose, Engineer) and others of which, not so much (Chomper, Citron). And small changes to characters like All Star and make me love them more. The new artstyle does not tick me off, but I do prefer the slightly more lifelike tone that GW and GW 2 took with their graphics. Also, they made Citron look like a teddy bear comapred to GW 2! Someone's gonna pay for this!

And this might be a very personal problem, but- the game feels slow. The implementation of a sprinting function has virtually lowered the base movement speed of all the characters. You cannot use your primary weapon while sprinting, and only a select few characters have abilities to use while doing it (Citron, Super Brainz) and considering it's not something you do while in combat, it makes for less electric battles than in the GW games.

But we have to hold hope. I know BFN can go on to do great things. We all do! If we hold hope, and let our criticisms be heard in a civil manner, maybe they might improve the game. Not so much as to bring back Variants maybe, but to try and recapture some of that GW magic I know is hiding away, or make BFN shine in it's own new way, introducing an innovation of it's own. Lets hope we can keep the lifespan of this game long, so we can see it grow. I know we can!

I enjoy the game but let's face it, the controls are awkward at best and for the most part don't allow for the skill gap the first two had...this is why team balancing is such a problem.  This aside EA hasn't learned from fortnite and nintendo.  You do not need a new game engine to be fun...they could have re-used the GW2 frostbite engine with new content & chars and we'd all be happy...finally they haven't learned that you can make more money with a free game with purchasable skins...instead they are trying to have it both ways...charge to buy and charge in game.  If it was free they'd have 10x the player volume instead of tumbleweeds 2 months in.  I guarantee a company could buy GW2 make it free and sell skins and still make a fortune and grow the player base...it's a shame.

  • @Gormey That is the solid truth man.  I have branched out and started playing some older shooters that are still thriving.  In doing so I’ve noticed some really cool functions that should be implemented in this game.  Like testing maps or characters and giving feedback before they launch into multiplayer.  Timeouts for people who quit mid round and mess up a lobby.  Switching people to teams getting stomped.  As is this game invites toxicity.  It can be changed yet it probably won’t.  Very unfortunate.

@Gormey agreed. I still enjoy BfN a lot but I again wish they would have held off on launching it and had more testing and once it was more mechanically sound, hype it up more prior to a full release. I still haven't gone back to World of Tanks and Overwatch has been dead to me for a while now but I have been playing Paladins again. I've been hitting old single player FPS games with solid campaigns and some of the new 'retro' ones like Amid Evil, Ion Fury, Dusk, and Project: Warlock.

Still, I'm not giving up on BfN anytime soon and I can get players in Ops consistently. But, it's important to realize that it needs work and the sooner it gets it the better.

@Iron_Guard8 I deleted gw1 and gw2 after this came out to force me to max rank, but I may have to reinstall as this game is often dead on na east for tv.
  • @Gormey You seem to prefer TV over TT like many players do. I wonder why since TT is by far the most interesting game mode for me. Or better: was due to the changes to smaller 8v8 lobbies.
  • @ippig always hated TT in all gw games...I play for the joy of outplaying people in one on one or two on one battles. I'm an old gamer that was a fan of original deathmatch where it was every player for themself and first to 25 or 30 wins...duke nukem, blood, quake, unreal tournament, halo 2, etc. TT in my opinion is for people who enjoy team play or no skill players who camp for cheap kills...It would fair to say I hate TT.
  • @Gormey I think it's the complete opposite: I experienced so many players in TV moving in groups and getting cheap kills. The spawn system in TV is just odd. It's not fun to spawn right into the enemy group while your team mates are on the other side of the map.
Anyway, TT is broken now and isn't fun like it was used to be.

@Gormey I started on all those games too (in fact, I'm playing through the single player campaigns in many of these classics right now, currently on the bonus 5th episode of Duke Nukem in the anniversary edition). But I'm also an avid tabletop war gamer so I really like objectives and ever since GW1 I've always preferred G&G and then TT with GW2.

I do hate the campers in TT though, it was usually cacti in GW1 that would snipe the entire time and get top vanquisher but would still lose as they didn't focus on the points at all. I do like working with a team to press/defend the objectives over just vanquishing though.

Edit: When I first started playing GW1 I vastly preferred mixed mode as it let me play all the modes and see all the maps as while I prefer TT, I like to mix things up and my 2nd favorite mode was Taco Bandits once it was added.
