How do i play online without a Playstation Plus membership on the PS4?

I am just totally in awe that I have to purchase an unwanted PlayStation Plus account just to be able to play Star Wars Battlefront online on my Ps4. This is absurd. There's really no substantive single-player mode. The ones that are offered are fun for bout 20 minutes. I've always played online with a code that usually comes with the game. Now I've payed $65 for the game but must pay another $50 to play online. This is just complete, total *. I've been playing EA games since the early 1990's but after this experience I'm just done giving another penny to EA. And of course this info about needing PlayStation plus is in fine print on the back of the game case. Once again just *. If I knew I would need PlayStation plus to play the meat of the game, I would've not bought the game.
