I personally don't like the idea of a tech tree until a later stage in the game, and also DNA was scarce enough, otherwise your ideas are good, I would like to see some in depth customization like making your own parts.

I would love to see the game have an in depth space experience. More trade items and a dynamic market to where some planets pay more or less for an item depending on supply and demand. Perhaps an online scene that has a dynamic market influenced by actual live players.
This game would be a hit if re-made!!
