Re: Game takes double disk space when patching or repairing

Accepting as solution for visibility purposes.

Hi all,

We are aware of an oddity with the EA app that occurs for players trying to update the game if they have already pre-loaded it last Tuesday or yesterday.

When you try to download the small update released last night, which is about 2-3GB, and you do not have 125GB+ of hard drive storage space available, the update will fail and display an error.

The extra 125GB+ needed is temporary and will be recovered after the update is completed.

If the space is not available, a full uninstall and reinstall of the game will install the correct patch.

Hope this helps.

  • I uninstalled the game. Restarted my PC and installed it again.
    Same problem...

    Any suggestions?

I restarted the install now and already it says LOW DISK SPACE and I have a 223 Gb drive. The download didn't stop but I guess I will have problems with the installation.  I deinstalled all other games for this.

  • @EA_Leeuw I tried this as well and had plenty of space both times It has been installed and reinstalled multiple times and still will not launch
  • The problem is not solved!

I have the update loop. It always says "update required". After pressing update, it seems to download something, just a few seconds, and then it's finished without any error.

But after that it still says "update required".

I have 170 GB left of free space after the game is already installed using 130 GB.

So the 125 GB error is not and issue here. But I can't start the game because I am in the update required loop.

  • This issue is actually the reason I can't play the game from my SSD, because it has "only" 220GB of space. Now I could re-download the full game every time there's an update, but that would take about 3h for me and my free time is precious to me.

If this is the EA launcher, I really regret right now, that I didn't buy this game on Steam and let it handle this all.

Another thing that doesn't work either with the EA launcher, is copying the game folder to another drive, and let EA launcher find it there. When I tried to install it at the location I copied it to, instead of just recovering the files, it redownloaded the complete game.

Another time I regret I didn't buy at Steam because it even comes with a function for changing game file directory.

This is really annoying, to be honest.

This is not only related to the game already being preloaded as it happens again with todays patch.

Reinstall did not fix the issue pre-launch as the game tried to update itself after re-installing and then you were back to the 260GB requirement.

May I remind you that the minimum specs says 130 GB of free HDD. Not 130GB + 130 GB when patching.

People who cant play the game due to this should be eligible for refund as the minimum specs EA themselves are posting isnt correct.

    Thats false advertising.

Telling people to reinstall a 130+ GB game for every patch because you are enforcing a beta launcher isnt ok at all.

@3DiE9djua2 Hi, try clearing the EA App cache : go to help -> App recovery -> clear cache. Then restart and try to download the game patch again. It worked for me, no need to reinstall the 155Gb
  • For those that do not have 125GB of free space with the game installed this is still an issue. For this workaround is still impractical even if it only needs to be done once. I hope future updates will not require the same workaround. Otherwise it seems that buying a new SSD is the only viable solution.

  • @EA_Leeuw is there a workaorund? where I am now i have a bad internet connection so re-downoading a 100 gb game is impractical, also can not clear enough disk space.
Any solution that does not require re downloading the whole game or clearing storage space?

    Hey @Gastensep,

The workaround would be to remove the game from your system and redownload it again, so it has the patch included in it.
  • This issue isnt even related to this game.

Just updated Battlefield 2042 and guess what. Doubles size on disk.

255mb patch turned into 80GB extra used during patching.

No wonder it takes so much logner updating games with EA app compared to Origin when it literalle is copygn the entire game before patching.

@EA_Leeuw I really hope you guys are forwarding this to the EA app devs because this must be the worst practise I've ever seen when it comes to updating games. EA is also literally lying about their HDD requirments when needed space is double of what you list.

  • But when will it be fixed so we dont need to free up 130 Gb's to do a small update?

  • I should NOT have to uninstall and reinstall a game just for a stupid update.  I don't understand how you guys at EA haven't figured out a better way of doing this.  It's 2023, not 2006... this is asinine.

Is there any progress in this case? I am getting tired of playing in offline mode especially when the game crashes all the time in every location (which I guess cannot be fixed without an update). The game is great, however, it is not enjoyable anymore when I have to restart the computer with each crash.

If you don't care about the update you can bypass it by going offline in the EA app. Then you can launch the game again without doing the update.
