Re: Sims 3 64-bit: problems installing store/custom content

Marked as a solution for visibility

For anyone still having issues installing store or custom content, the update today (November 9) has fixed the underlying problem that is the most common cause of an "Error downloading content" or "critical system failure."

If you have this issue, please repair the game in Origin: open your game library, right-click on the Sims 3 icon, and select Repair.  Then open the launcher and see whether the base game icon in the lower left corner is grayed out.  If it's now green, the underlying issue should be solved, and you should be able to install content again.

Although the underlying cause of expansion and stuff pack icons being grayed out is the same, that is not addressed in this fix.  However, the grayed out pack icons should not affect your ability to install or use store or custom content.

If you still get the same errors when downloading or installing content, and your base game icon is NOT grayed out in the launcher, please move the entire Sims 3 folder out of Documents/Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, open the launcher to spawn a clean folder, and download a fresh copy of one item to test.

Whenever I launch my game with custom content running it goes into the smaller screen where my game would normally fully launch but instead stays there with the rainbow loading cursor. I’ve given it time and it does not launch. I’ve tried reinstalling it, resetting my origin, repairing it, deleting the cache files, etc. and nothing seems to be working.

@callinda21  Does this happen with any custom content at all?  This sounds like what happens when you have bad cc that crashes the launcher.  Try installing one cc item into a clean Sims 3 folder: move the existing folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, open the launcher to spawn a clean folder, install just one cc item, and test.  If the game still doesn't work, trash the new Sims 3 folder, open the launcher to create another one, and install a different cc item to test instead.

If none of this helps, please make sure you don't have iCloud enabled and set to automatically sync the contents of Documents with cloud storage.  You can either disable iCloud entirely or just block the auto sync feature.  This article is about a different issue, but the relevant settings are the same:

@puzzlezaddict Thank you for your advice. I disabled the iCloud element but my game is still not working with my custom content. I download all my cc from the exchange and only download content that uses the expansion packs that I have. Do you think it’s an issue of downloading too much cc? Or is it the cc itself that is an issue?
  • @callinda21 I finally got mine to work, the problem was custom sims and pets for me, and also cc with the triangle behind it. I removed it and the game started to work!
  • Hi! I'm very stressed out. For the past few days, I've been checking this thread and trying everything that was suggested. I cannot seem to get my sims 3 store content to download no matter what I try. I attached a screenshot of the error message I get every time. Other than that and a couple of small glitches (game randomly shutting down every now and then and atrocious looking eyelashes in CAS) the game runs smoothly. But I really want to use my store content! Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

My game now launches with minimal cc but whenever I try and enter my household it immediately crashes. Anyone know how to fix this? It has to be an issue with cc because it plays fine without it.

@dizzyyydreamerrr  Try repairing the game in Origin: open your game library, right-click on the Sims 3 icon, and select Repair.  Even if you tried this before, try it again now—the update from two days ago changed the way the repair works so it should now fix this issue.

You'll know the repair worked as it should have when the base game green plumbob icon, in the lower left corner of the launcher, is colored in rather than grayed out.  If it's not, run the Origin reset tool for macOS and repair again.

@callinda21  If your game crashes with cc but not without it, then yes, the issue is your cc, and you'll need to remove it.  You can try reinstalling just a few of the items, to see whether you still get the crash, if you really like the cc and don't mind spending extra time troubleshooting.  Or you can play without it or find some new cc to use instead.
