I also just had this issue and I really don’t want to submit any more animals to the fair if I’m just going to lose them. It’s so mean???

Think I figured it out. Check you household inventory, not the individual sim's inventory.- @BayWanders My hen was not there either. I just lost my sim's best friend...
Out of curiosity, was the hen in your household inventory?

That was a potential solution 2 years ago when I originally experienced this. Sounds like it’s happening again with no solution as of 11/11/23
If you are lucky, you can find your cow or Lama there. Not the chicken. They are lost forever it seems. After a long time this happened to me again.
I'm shocked to see that this bug exists for 3 years now. My cow, my llama, my watermelon... I just accepted this because I had to win but it's very annoying, and the fact that they are doing NOTHING about it is even more annoying.
FYI-I checked both the household inventory and my sims personal inventory. I even checked the sim who wasn't at the fair just in case. No chicken or egg in either
