Off-the-Grid cooking on stove doesn't use optional ingredients

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:Mac
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? 1.100.144.1230
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? All expansions except Horse Ranch, all game and stuff packs
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Put a sim on an off-the-grid lot with an OTG-compatible stove. Try to cook something that the Sim has optional ingredients for.
What happens when the bug occurs? Fresh optional ingredients aren't used
What do you expect to see? Fresh ingredients are used if desired, just like if the sim is cooking with power
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Neutral/Not Sure

Recipes that have optional fresh ingredients do not use those ingredients when cooking off-the-grid on a stove. A level 1 base game example would be tomato soup. If my Sim has a tomato in their inventory and I cook tomato soup with the off-the-grid cooking option, the popover shows I have 1/1 optional tomatoes, but the tomato is not used.

  • Confirmed the issue occurs without mods and a deleted localthumbcache file in a fresh save and a freshly-made sim.
  • Does not occur for required ingredients, e.g. fish-on-a-stick still uses the fish
  • Does not occur with the regular "cook" option, either on a lot that's on the grid or on an OTG lot with a power source
  • Mixed results with a grill: Tomato Soup used up my tomato, but Mushroom Steak did not use my 5 mushrooms.

  • I started a farm. Off-grid? Cool! I got some chickens and collected eggs. Let's cook with an egg!

Can't. Find every spoiler trying to look up how to cook an egg. It turns out you can't use fresh ingredients off-grid. That makes no sense because people living off grid are more likely to cook using their own produce, but whatever. If I have enough power, I should be able to use the oven's normal "Cook" option. Nope.

If I hadn't looked it up and switched back to the grid, I never would have found the ability to cook my own eggs.

You made an expansion designed around being a farmer, harvesting your own food, which by default, you can't use to cook with. Am I missing something?

Correction: The oven not allowing the regular "Cook" option, despite having enough power, was a bug.

Nevertheless, you should be able to cook off grid with fresh ingredients. I don't think there was an era before electricity, when farmers couldn't cook their own eggs, and had to buy them from the fridge... 🙂

@MaximumBlaze I've tested this on the stoves that are Functional Off the Grid and it works for me. My Sim has low cooking skill and he has eggs and bread in his inventory. He can cook Eggs and Toast on all of the stoves I have available to buy that work off the grid.

It does need to be a recipe though, so you couldn't just cook an egg it has to be an egg recipe. As long as the stove you have is Functional Off the Grid it should be fine for you. I click the stove rather than the fridge for off the grid cooking. It probably doesn't matter but that's just how I do it. If you have the Simple Living lot trait you'll need the additional ingredients too, either from the Grocery Delivery or grown/home made.

If it's not working for you still, drop us a reply and if you can it would help if you can take an image of it so we can see what you're seeing.

    Hope this helps, good luck.

I'm pretty sure this used to work before the Cottage Living expansion, but it's been so long now I can't remember for sure. Now, if I use "Cook off the grid" on the stove, sure I can make eggs and toast. If I have the 2 eggs in my inventory, it will show Eggs (2/2) when I hover over the item. But it doesn't use the eggs when I try to cook them and it charges me the full amount. If I have enough power and use the normal cook option, it correctly uses the eggs and gives me the fresh ingredients discount. The only fresh ingredients the off-the-grid cooking option uses are the required items, not the optional ones (For example, if I cook popcorn crickets or fish on a stick, it uses up the cricket flour or fish).

The only way I've found to get off-the-grid cooking to actually use my ingredients is if I combine it with Simple Living... but then for some reason I need more fish for fish-on-a-stick? Once I have a couple of levels of fishing under my belt that's not so much an issue but when just starting out it can be a problem.

I really think you just need to use functional off-grid appliances. I play off grid all the time and can cook the eggs. Look out for the golden eggs when you cook them up they have some funny side effects. LOL

I went ahead and filed a bug report for this, since I'm pretty sure this worked once upon a time, and I'm not sure why it would show me optional ingredients if it wasn't going to use them. It's also darn annoying for a Freegan Sim.

This appears to be fixed in the 1.101.290 patch.

    @wombatilim Thank you for checking.

I'm locking this thread so just make a new thread if it happens again.
