[ARCHIVED] Placing roofs crashes the game

Hi! I'm trying to place roofing down, but when I do it won't allow me to adjust it or remove it. After that, I can't place any build or buy objects down either. It won't let me quit the game either. I removed my mods folder and repaired the game and it still happens.

Exact same thing right here. Happened earlier this year and now it's happening again, no definitive cause or remedy. Last time I tried to exit game and repair game and restart computer, exit game and repair game and not restart, didn't launch but repaired game and didn't restart, didn't launch and repaired game and did restart, but it kept happening regardless for a few days in a row until I got frustrated and stopped trying to build. By the time I decided to build again, it fixed itself and there wasn't any update in between. This time (like last time, too), there wasn't any sign of this issue after the last update. Until I downloaded 2 packs (unsure if I'd downloaded any packs last time this happened but it is highly likely) and didn't repair game before launching, which is a habit I've been trying to practice since the last time this happened. The last 2 times I've played before today, I didn't place any roof at all but did place roof in between (after the last update) and didn't have this particular issue.

I had a similar issue right after the update, assumably a result of the update, but replace "roof" with literally any thing or any action in build mode and it was way more complex and obnoxious, and happened a few days launching in a row until it wasn't happening sometime after that. Do or place or alter or change anything and it was triggered. The work around was to select a different tool--swatch, hammer, copy, select-- or jump to live mode and back into build mode and then I could do just 1 thing but then have to mess around between any action before I could do another singular thing. I'd stopped playing for a bit cause repairing the game in any way did not remedy things and I'd forgot it'd happened at all until I realized it wasn't happening the next time I launched and built. But this isn't what we're discussing (worth mentioning though in case it's related at all).

Breakdown of the bug/issue and references to the last time this happened:

As soon as I place a roof, any roof, game refuses to accept alterations, changes, or placement of any kind to any thing. I can select items, copy a tile and have it "in hand" to place, fill a wall with a different wall covering, select items from catalogue, open the swatch menu on an item, select the hammer destroy tool, switch categories in catalogue (like from items to terrain paint), etc but as soon as I place or release or click to finalize an alteration or addition or deletion, it reverts and nothing happens like I never even tried to do anything in the first place. But it still goes through the selection or alteration effects, lets you move or drag or whatever, shows the boom and plays the sound boom that would happen when destroying, shows the roof outline of where it would go, green or red tiles where something could/would be set, but it always just reverts before completing at the same time the action is submitted. It's difficult to explain, but I'm trying my best cause it's super particular and I'm not the technical type and don't know how games work. The last time (and assumably this time because I'm too tired to explore the issue and attempt to troubleshoot this in depth again) it didn't matter whether or not I used moveobjects within the launch; went from live mode into build mode; entered a lot in build mode; was on residential or community lot; occupied or unoccupied lot; which world I was in cause I tried base game and 2 pack specific; which size lot, cause I tried 3 different sizes; opened the gallery at all; entered CAS at all. It happened regardless, and I didn't explore beyond these options and don't recall exact specifics. (Both last time and this round) I could not switch back to live, I could not enter the gallery, the only option in the three dots menu I could select was to save game, which brings up the save overlay and circle animation except it doesn't actually do anything but play the graphics and act as though it's doing the action, but really it just traps me in purgatory and never saves as though the actual core sequence for saving wasn't triggered (last time this happened, I left my laptop open for 10 hours on the save screen and absolutely nothing happened or changed at all and the circle save graphic loop was still going). There is a lapse in communication or a freeze or a wall that's interfering in some way that is not easy for me to define, and I have no clue what's causing it, except to say that placing any roof seems to trigger this and I just built for 2 hours without issue aaaand without saving. But then I placed a roof.

Hopefully--like the last time, if I abandon the sims for a few days and then come back to it--this issue will magically disappear again.

HP laptop, updates and patches up to date, I used to have mods but last year I followed step by step (twice in case I'd messed it up) to remove all of them and uninstall the sims 4 completely from my computer before reinstalling and have not had mods since, my current game and packs:

@crinrict I have the same issue! Not sure if it happens on different lots but it has happened many times now on one lot. I cannot build ceilings or roofs or change anything on the roof or it will freeze the game; unable to place anything in build mode like OP said and unable to save.

This is happening to me ever since the Life and Death update.

I tried reinstalling the game and wiping the documents folder. I tried creating a fresh save. I've updated my graphics drivers. It just keeps happening when I adjust the roofing and it is happening on any lot.

Did anyone ever discover the cause of this issue? I've never had this happen in the years I have been playing this game until the Life and Death update.

Edit to add that I have never used mods.

The issue has actually changed a bit for me since the 1.111.102.1030 update.

Previously when the issue happened I could still pan the camera around and attempt to move or place objects and open the game menu but it would be unresponsive.

Now since the latest patch when the issue happens I cannot pan the camera, click on anything or open the game menu. Task manager also doesn't indicate that the game isn't responding like it did previous so yeah I just don't know what's going on...

    Hey all,

Just checking in to see if anyone is still seeing this on a modless game as we've been unable to reproduce it on our end.

If so please share your save file with us (instructions: http://x.ea.com/74420) so we can take a look.

    Thanks!
  • I unfortunately play with mods enabled - even though this problem also occurs without any mods. I don't experience this immediately, it's typically after an hour or 2 of gameplay before it crashes. It's typically when you finally feeling a bit save again.
In my case, it was on the Hay Hill Landing lot in Ravenwood, with all packs installed (not on my account, though) in Dutch, with a full household and always the gabled roof. Doesn't mean it can't happen with other roofs, I just noticed it was always the same one. Can't do anything afterwards, the game just appears to be working normally, but all input does nothing. Saving or manage worlds without saving always ends up loading into eternity. The entire UI is unresponsive, but the sounds and everything still work fine. Can still pan the camera, but there's no escaping what-so-ever.
CPU and RAM usage are very high when this happens, got an Intel 10th gen i5 with an Nvidia RTX3060, Windows 11 and OS + drivers are up to date.
