Re: BF 2042 Tips, Part I: Settings - Comprehensive PC Settings Guide

@SterlingARCH3RI am unable to modify PROFSAVE or PROFSAVE_profile in notes or wordpad. When I open them it is blank but there are many pages to scroll down through. PROFSAVE is 1,500 kb, _profile is 8kb, both last modified at last launch attempt (game is broken for me after update #3, cant launch it.) @EA_Atic

I would delete everything in that folder, run a file integrity check on the game in Steam, and let the files regenerate.

Then also download and install Notepad ++ and stop editing config files with incompatible software like notepad.

@fatherspace Hi, I didn't see this alert when you pinged me for some reason. The file to modify with respect to this guide is PROFSAV_profile. I do it in Notepad.

If that file isn't showing up or is otherwise problematic, then as was mentioned by another user, you should delete that file and repair the game. You can repair via Origin by right-clicking the game and selecting repair. You should be able to get everything back to normal. You'll have to start all over with the settings changes, but it's well worth fine tuning your settings from the get-go.

For future reference, I'd always make a copy of the PROFSAV_profile file once you make your satisfactory settings changes. Then, save it under a different name in the same folder or elsewhere.

I find it ridiculous there has to be this amount of troubleshooting to try and smoothly run the game…

  • @-s0-SDBNot really that ridiculous as there are just as many different system variations as there are problems. Meaning, your computer is different than mine and this goes for everyone out there. These sort of guides are great not only because someone(s) has taken the time to investigate solutions but actually are trying to give some direction on possible fixes. All games can and are tweaked by users and BF2042 is no different than any other game in this regard.

    Cheers

And what if the PROSAVE_profile and settings Directory are never made?

@WhtFeather It's always made as that's what the game looks to for the settings/controls. Make sure you're looking at the correct directory - C drive > Users > your name > Documents > Battlefield 2042 > Settings

Well maybe that is why it wont run... It never finishes the install.

There is not even a folder from the last try at download and install.

@WhtFeather It looks like you're only showing C drive > Users folder. You'd have to go into your name (the "drsni" folder?), and follow the directory further.

Look further down in the photo. I have the tree opened so you can see the documents folder and the battlefield 4 and BFBC2 games folders.

Both of those games run correctly,

It is no where to be found. It had installed the directory in the past, but it is always empty.

@WhtFeather Are you not able to play at all? Or, if you're able to play, then do your settings always get reset?

    Have you checked other drives?

Yesterday I started Origin, It did a 2 hour update and repair of the files. I don't know if an update came out or what.

After that I tried to run the game, and ended at the same point of a partial black screen (image attached).

    I have found the Battlefield 2042 folder in the c:/user/"username"/One drive/ documents/...

which is strange because I disabled and deleted one drive when I reloaded windows 10.

Now I am not quite sure what to do because the other games are working this way and the Battlefield 2042 has put dump files in the directory!~~

The play time is now up to three hours of this "black screen"

@WhtFeather That is strange. I don't know how it ends up in the One Drive folder. Have you tried completely uninstalling the game, and also deleting the entire BF2042 folder in the path you showed?

I have deleted it all before, I am going to again, but I have to move the stuff from OneDrive first.  Anyone able to read dump files to see what they contain?

@WhtFeather If you no longer use OneDrive, then I'd make sure it's removed from the computer completely (e.g. via CCleaner). I'd make sure that it's no longer on your computer via Start > type "Programs" > Add or Remove Programs. If OneDrive still shows up there, then left click Microsoft OneDrive from the list of programs there, then select Uninstall there.

For the dump file, if someone can analyze it here, I'd either get the DMP file added/linked here, or there should be an online walkthrough of how to open a DMP file on your computer via the Command Prompt, which you can then post an image/text of here.

I have completely removed OneDrive, but windows keeps putting the folder back in. I may have to reinstall Win 10 again.

Opened the mdmp file, actually many of them and they all came up with the same error.

@WhtFeather Not sure you've figured out how to fix this since.

That error appears to show up when not being able to process files correctly, which I believe relates directly to the OneNote folder that keeps getting created.

Part of the troubleshooting involves one to "Reset your PC" and "Keep my files" (so as not to lose data). That may be something to consider.

Hello @SterlingARCH3R. Thank you for what seems indeed to be a very comprehensive list of items to look at to optimise the PC experience. Have you measured the results of your suggestions? You can imagine people can be sceptic, with good reason, as so much internet advice goes around that are false or makes little difference. I mean I make changes to games myself, but I often wonder whether the differences are in my head or actually measurable.

@Maj_Meerkat Yes. Since your rig/setup may be different, I recommend pulling up performance indicators while making each change. For me, what I share all make an improvement.

I use a program from NVidia called frameview. It’s a really basic FPS and frametime recording tool that has an on screen display of useful information plus it can record your metrics and automatically loads it into an excel spreadsheet. When I first play a game this is the first thing I do and test all the game settings. for example I found with bf2042 that using directx 11 versus 12 made no differenece to fps or frametimes, also future frame rendering on or off made no difference. the preset graphics settings do make a big difference and also dlss turned onto quality mode gave me an extra 15 fps. your rig will be different. test test test.

  • I followed your guide & it worked great but now BF 2042 just had an update Fri/17th of Sept. Now my game locks up after a game & black screens. I went into my Nvidia 3D settings on the control panel & where u said set the BF2042.exe to priority it won't do it. I click on it it & it puts it in the spot but blinks right back to Adobe Acrobat which I have no idea why?? anyway there's no way to save the changes either. So what am I missing or doing wrong??

I even tried to add BF2042.exe from the list & it's a no go.
