Re: Battlefield 2042 restart whole pc

The game has also been restarting my PC quite consistently for a while now. It was off and on since Patch#3, clearing the cache in the "Documents\Battlefield 2042\cache" folder helped but ever since Patch 4.1 or 4.2, it stopped helping (though now i have it set so nothing can write to the folder just in case that was even an issue).

The game just power cycles the PC. The only error logs are that windows shut down unexpectedly. The game doesn't even max out my system cause I have a fps cap set in Nvidia control panel to limit fps to 144hz in 1080p (which actually helped with 100%CPU utilization so that's nice). Pretty sure it's not an overheating issue because it can go hours without restarting or having any problems.

I've tried
- turning off XMP in bios.

- different graphics drivers

- changing all the graphics settings

- clearing ea app/cache in documents

- disabling all overlays

So far, I've resorted to just keeping a journal of what's happening off the top of my head when it restarts.

3 out of the 3 times it has restarted my PC, I had been looking at smoke/smoke grenades of some sort that I did not throw.

1) Manifest, smoke, MAV, Stealth helo bombs, was bleeding out on ground

2) noshahr canals looking at scope glint through smoke, gunning wildcat barrage missile, holding rightclick zoom towards C point from road up from D.

3) caspian border, literally watched two smoke grenades get popped in front of me while lying on the ground dead and like clockwork computer restarted. (not sure if friendly or enemy but i think it was enemy smoke)

I had been running Falck with smoke grenades so I had been throwing a good amount of my own smoke grenades.

These restarts have been pretty random and have happened in <10 minutes to >5hours.

Sorry for the long post, but these are my findings so far. Will post more if I find out anything new.

My specs are:
Win10 x64

32GB ram

i7-11700K (no OC)

RTX 2080TI (on driver 528.49 cause it's the last one that had worked fine for the longest time)

PS. as a side note, since patch 4.2, I've gotten stuck in black loading screens loading into and out of games (it never used to happen before this).

At that moment u have 1830MHz (boost) clock. Try to check the problem on reference GPU clock speed: 1350 MHz (base) and 1545-1750 MHz (boost).

  • Base clock is 1350 MHz, I'm currently not running any OC software and any OC is from the factory OC.

The card is an EVGA 11G-P4-2487-KR if interested.

You are right, though, the boost clock is high, averaging around 1870MHz. maxing out at 1980MHz according to HWiNFO.

CPU Temp max was 88.5C, avg ~78C. GPU Temp max was 76C, avg 70C.

Sorry if my replies are slow. I don't keep the browser open when playing 2042 cause the game is so temperamental. Just played way too long to see if it would crash, it did not. Will update if the situation actually develops.

    Two more instances of restarts.

Manifest, latv4 was gunning 50mm shooting at wildcat, driver popped thermal smoke, instantly crashed within 1sec. <3mins loading into the round.

Noshahr Canals crashed on load in...?!? didn't see, was writing in this txt doc.

played 2 rounds after with no issue. one on spearhead, and other on renewal.

installed software to downclock gpu next time playing. hope for better luck.

dxdiag had no useful updates during/after the restarts.

didn't have much issue with temps.

@blckbird2002  Update youre system drivers again.
Dont forget Chipset drivers <-- important.

use this tool to upgrade to the latest drivers:
    SYSTEM DRIVERS AND CHIPSET UPDATE

Check the Youtube movie how to install , download and update ALL drivers.
    https://youtu.be/6UpzenfVOAA
Open the web browser and enter url: https:\\www.drivereasy.com
Click at Driver Update Tool in the upper bar and select Download Free Version.
Click at the green button with the text DOWNLOAD DRIVER EASY NOW.
When tool is downloaded select the file and run.
    Install Driver Easy Tool.

Some drivers updates need to reboot your system, reboot system when needed,
continue using Driver Easy untill 'ALL' drivers are updated.
This free version allows only 1 download and 1 update at once

It has been a while. I haven't played too much, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say downclocking the GPU has improved the stability of the game so far.

Can't resist to log in and comment about this but sorry downclocking the GPU does not solve the issue at all.

    For my case, i9 10850k (undervolted 4.8ghz from 5ghz *Because of BF2042* 1.25v) RTX 3070ti (undervolted 1920mhz from 1950mhz, 0.875mV)

Temps for GPU <63°C and CPU 80-90°C .

Only this game makes my PC reboot, other games like warzone 2 , apex or diablo 4, etc.

tried config notepad settings too doesn't work.

Capped FPS starting from 144, 120, 80 does not work.

Previously on most patches, I do not have this problem at all and my CPU temps are <70ish °C.

I did downclock the GPU by quite a lot. From a boost clock of 1950mhz to 1765mhz (-185mhz). Did not actually change any voltage/power settings, though.

  • @MADrag0n You are getting your facts wrong.
Those specs that you are looking at does not mean anything compared to real world frequency. Go search any reviewer for 3070 ti on youtube and you will understand.

Same goes to SSD, A SSD that is worth1TB of space, does not mean you get 1 TB of memory space.

Theory does not always transit/apply to practical in REAL LIFE.

    @NATURALxNINE
I'm clearly understanding what is "reference frequency". I'm clearly understanding the difference between reference and overclocked frequencies. I'm not understanding what is "real world frequency".
It's your issues if u do not accept information about GPU working parameters from GPUs chips developer itself, and then it's your problem if your GPU work in some cases not as intended...

And your analogy with the size of the SSD is not appropriate at all. If you buy something with memory/storage, the device will have exactly that much memory, but with nuances: 1) some amount of memory may already be occupied and unavailable to the user; 2) the number of the memory size itself can be calculated in different ways: using standard SI metric prefixes or using the traditional calculation of the Binary System; as calculated, always indicated on the product package.

  • Sorry for wall of text, just wanted to post an update.

The game has been restarting the PC again ever since the 5.3.0 update. I've since just given up and updated to newer nvidia drivers for newer games since the old driver wasn't helping anymore. The GPU downclock wasn't helping anymore either (hey, at least it worked for like 2 months).

Though, like I've said before, there's something about the smoke in this game that makes my PC restart itself. 99% of the time, there has been some type of smoke on the screen (whether it's vehicle smoke, smoke grenades, smoke grenade launcher smoke it doesn't matter). My own smokes don't seem to be a problem, but as soon as another player uses smoke it's a tossup on whether it would crash or not. An example would be a CO-OP breakthrough round on orbital (the one with the rocket launch iirc) where I was pretty much only using the smoke grenade launcher as Angel to resupply myself (one of the few things I can still get ranks on in solo/co-op), and it was fine all the way till the end when i noticed my friend fire his smoke grenade launcher once (i heard it) and immediately restarted my PC. We only play on 64 player servers since one of my friends runs on older hardware (at least they don't crash though they do sometimes get stuck with a black loading screen in between rounds).

I wouldn't be surprised if this game was what bricked my previous M.2 drive. I'm just tired of jumping through hoops trying to deal with this issue that only affects this game.

A thought just occurred to me while writing this rant in frustration... I need to start keeping track of whether the guns I'm using have IR scopes or not... No promises, though, since I've stopped playing unless my friends are playing and I've crashed at least once every other time we play.

    Edit: update 5.3 , not 5.2

My PC used to crash and power cycle. It's usually caused by RAM timing issues or CPU voltage issues.

HCI Memtest is a good ram memory tester.

  • This is clearly a bad set of coding. I doubt it will ever be resolved.
