You're pretty much spot on with your point 3. Create a state, save/export. Then when you start a new game you'll be prompted to import the worldstate from the Keep. 

You don't need Xbox Live Gold for this, a regular Silver account will suffice.

    Thank you so much for the reply. Now I don't have to waste time trying to import my characters. I'm guessing the 2D avatar for custom hero is the same as the default one if I choose the same class, gender, etc?

    Anyway, thank you again. Onwards to the KEEP!
