Stuck in the mud

I was happily playing career mode for weeks and months until a few days ago and suddenly, when defending, my players won’t turn or sprint. However when I have the ball I can sprint past all 11 players on Ultimate mode. 
defending is like being stuck in the mud and AI just does knock ons past me.
