In my case after I got all of the event steps completed in this other 'new game', apparently they were on my account, as when I then renamed my original folder back to 'The Sims 4', and the game opened using it, in my case then all of the steps on the Event for this week showed up as completed in my current game also. I did do a game repair and removed the localthumbcache.package in my current 'The Sims 4' folder before I re-entered the game. Not sure if that last part helped at all, but for me it was a good result.
