Re: Leviathan DLC crashing

I've had this problem as well.   I've done everything I can think of short of uninstalling the game(considering doing that now) and just starting with a new save (something I really don't want to do.  Despite hundreds of hours, this is the first time I have a save spanning all three games and I really want to complete all of ME3 with all of the DLC).  I've completed ME3 multiple times and this DLC multiple times with the same (and my current) computer.  The only difference is I uninstalled all the mass effect games about a year ago (limited harddrive space) and have recently reinstalled them.  If anyone has any other advice or assistance I would be grateful.  I'm tearing my hair out.

I also have the exact same crash, which I've repeated dozens of times now without fail, on two different computers, one running Windows 7 64-bit, the other 32-bit. Both produce the same error even in windowed mode with graphics settings minimized as recommended by some. I can only conclude that this is either not a performance issue but a save-game error (where the game always crashes at that point if certain variables are true), or else possibly tied to ATI graphics hardware, which both computers are running.

Alternatively, if anyone can confirm that their setup does not have this issue, might I perhaps send someone my save file and have them progress beyond the crash point for me?

  • I was all set to confirm that I DO NOT have this problem on either my Win7 or Win8 machine, until I saw "ATI graphics" in your post.

Seriously?!?  How old is your rig?  AMD bought ATI in 2006.  So, ummmm... even before the first game was released.

Not sure any "ATI" gpu should be expected to handle ME3.  That you got as far as "Leviathan" is actually kinda' cool!

You don't have to be so condesending, Thandal.   I'm running an Nvidia card with an intel CPU and still have this issue.  I firmly believe that the file for the DLC that EA is sending out is corrupted.  This issue has happened since around January 2014 for the few people that have reported it.  I would wager if you, Thandal, hit the repair button for Leviathan you would encounter the same issue.   This is a legitimate problem that psans hardware, as has previously been demonstrated in other threads.  The fact that you want to ignore it and pretend like it isn't happening makes you look like the EA brown-noser that you are.

  • I wasn't being condescending, and I wasn't doubting that the problem occurred.  I was simply surprised that any "ATI" gpu was capable of running the game at all.

Repeated crashes at the exact same point are most frequently caused by an invalid instruction; one that either the software, or the hardware can't execute.  While it is entirely possible that the file EA provide is faulty and is responsible for the invalid instruction, the fact thousands of other players do not have this problem makes that... questionable.

Whatever the issue is, it is likely specific to the hardware/software combination on the particular machines which encounter it.  Hence the request for details about exactly that.

Which you, for example, didn't provide.  You simply said that you had an "nVidia card" and "Intel CPU" .  Which ones?

    Digital copy from Origins.

        Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Type: Intel Core 2 Duo, T9550

Processor Core Speed: Not OCed so 2.66 ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: Windows 7
        System RAM:  4 gigs
        Video Card Manufacturer: nVIDIA
        Video Card Model: Geforce 9600M
        Video Card RAM: 1 GB
        Video Card Driver Version: 9.18.13.3489

It's also worth noting that this is an apple computer that I'm using bootcamp with.  Again, the weirdest thing about this glitch is I've played the DLC before on this computer, same setup.  My specs are a little lower than most the other people having this problem as well that have posted them, and at every point in the game I'm over 20 fps.  I've turned all the graphic and sound settings down as much as I can and it hasn't helped.

Another thint to mention, the guy that started this thread

said it was fixed after hitting repair.  For some reason, this is no longer the solution so either that wasn't the real solution or there is something wrong with the files.

My Leviathan DLC is freezing up as well. I have played this DLC a few times before with no issue, however about a week ago when playing the DLC the game would not allow me to go down a ladder in the level picking up Dr. Ann Bryson from the planet as it is swarmed by Reapers. This is a new glitch in the game I have never seen before or experienced while playing this particular content.

Outside of re-installing the game what are my options?

Google is your friend. Over 1,000 results for "ME3 Ladder Glitch".

    Basically, try these in order:

    1.  Head toward the ladder in question and while moving look straight UP.  (Often successful with just this.)

    2.  Set game to play in "Windowed" mode.

    3.  Set resolution very low.

    4.  Set other graphics options to minimums.

    Good Luck!

"Well, there's your problem Lady!"  😕mileytongue:

Actually, I'm now out of ideas (especially since you said "it used to work".)  Getting Windows apps to run on Macs (using BootCamp, or any other shim) is well beyond my expertise.  So many, many places where a slip can occur.  😕mileyfrustrated:

The fact that it used to work is precisely why I sincerely doubt this issue is bootcamp, especially since others are having the same exact reproducable issue on vastly different hardware.

  • Yes, others are having the same issue.  But it's a tiny (miniscule, in fact) fraction of all ME3-Leviathan players on PCs.

(Wonder if they're all "PC-on-Mac" users as well?  Hadn't thought to ask, since they're providing PC specs.  Like you did...)

So while it's definitely an issue, isolating and reproducing it seems to be incredibly difficult.

I experience the same elevator problem, and shouldn't have an issue with graphics at all. Rest of the game has played fine.

    Dell Precision M6600

    Intel Core i7-2640M @ 2.80 GHz

    7.95 GHz Physical Memory

AMD FirePro M8900 (FireGL) Mobility Pro Graphics

OS: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

    DirectX 11

I just discovered my video card drivers are outdated, but I don't think that's causing the issue, since the rest of the game runs fine.

*edit* Updated the drivers with no luck*

Repaired both ME3 base files and the DLC. Multiplayer has run fine for teh past couple weeks. Just bought Leviathan today, and it's not working.

Lowered the graphics all the way possible with the configuration utlitiy and lowered the resolution, plus windowed with and without the border. Tried running it in compatability with no luck. Origin already runs in admin mode, but I haven't tried running ME3 in admin.

"So while it's definitely an issue, isolating and reproducing it seems to be incredibly difficult."

Alright Thandal, I have a challenge for you then over the next few weeks if you so choose to undertake it.  Delete the 'Default.sfar' file under the directory specified below.

    C:\Program Files\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3\BIOGame\DLC\DLC_EXP_Pack001 or wherever you have ME3 installed.

Then delete the 'installerdata' file in the directory

C:\Program Files\Origin Games\Mass Effect 3\BIOGame\DLC\__metadata\DLCEXPPACK001\__Installer or again if you have ME3 installed somewhere else use that path.

Then, it is as simple as hitting the repair button on the DLC.  It should automatically reinstall it.  From there you can get to the point where we are having the freezing issue in probably 2-4 hours on the easiest difficulty.  If you don't encounter the same crash, then we can say that it probably isn't a corrupted file being sent out from Origins.

This challege would apply to anyone else that hasn't had the issue and is looking at this thread as well.  Now, I completely understand if you don't want to do this challenge.  If my game was working I certainly wouldn't want to do anything to **** it up.  But there seem to be a few issues with Leviathan not just related to this specific problem (http://answers.ea.com/t5/Mass-Effect-3/Mass-Effect-3-Leviathan-DLC-Glitch/m-p/2440121#U2440121).   I could certainly be wrong, but I believe there is something wrong with the file EA is sending out or perhaps the installation process itself is somehow corrupting the file.  I don't know, I'm not technical with coding and the like, but considering how different everyone's hardware seems to be that is getting this glitch I don't think this is a hardware issue.

  • @peanuts;

    Challenge most defintely accepted!

I run with full-disk file-by-file backup, so no worries about being able to restore things to working order if they go tango uniform.

Might take a while, since I want to throughly document my current state, the changes made, and the results.

At least I found a Save with Adm. Hackett's message about seeing Dr. Bryson newly arrived at Shepard's private terminal, so I can start playing from there after I let EA/Origin make the "repairs".  😕mileywink:

OK, .sfar file and installer.xml deleted.  Origin reports game repaired, but, (as expected) Leviathan not installed.  Downloading now...

    CHALLENGE COMPLETED.  😕mileywink:

    Bottom Line:

No issues with repairing, re-installing, or playing Leviathan.

No problems with the files received from EA/Origin, and so it appears to be only certain players' specific hardware/software configurations that have the issue.

See this record of testing (MS Word version of OneNote): NOTES regarding testing for difficulties some players have with the Leviathan DLC.

Sad that Leviathan isn't working for you, but glad that Leviathan works fine for the overwhelming majority of players.

So, strangely enough, I managed to get around the CtD area, literally.

Instead of walking straight out into the doorway, I walked around the edge, and it fixed whatever was breaking the game.

W00t!  Kudos for this, brazentiger.  Hopefully, it will help others with the same problem.

@peanuts104;  Now we have a challenge for you, wouldn't you say?  😕mileywink:

Can you go into more specifics about how you went around it?  I've tried to do that a few different ways and it still crashes.
