Wherefore means why, not where. "Wherefore art thou Romeo" means "Why are you Romeo" (and not someone of a family I'm allowed to have a relationship with). She knew where Romeo was. He was right below the balcony.

It's old fashioned language, but there's a trace in the Dutch language -> Waarvoor, which means why.

    Are all Belgians multi-lingual to that extent?  English, Dutch, French?  More than that?

    I suspect that I once knew and remembered that dialect had existed, but just haven't had occasion to recall it in so long, it's now gone from memory entirely.

    Belgium is a trilingual country. In Flanders (the Dutch speaking region) We have to learn English, French and German in high school. I can understand Afrikaans (as spoken in South Africa) because it is very similar to Dutch. When you live in a small country and your native language is fairly uncommon, it's handy to know the languages of your neighbors.

    I can also read a little Old English, but not enough to pass the exam. 😕mileysad:
