Crypto Passive Rework Proposal

Crypto is one of the strongest recon legends in Apex Legends when it comes to gathering information, recovering banners, and initiating team support through surveillance. However, his lack of personal mobility severely limits his viability in fast-paced fights and solo queue matches. Once Crypto is caught out of position, he has no reliable way to escape or reposition, especially compared to other legends who have movement abilities like grapples, jump pads, or phase shifts.

To help balance this without sacrificing Crypto’s identity as a tactical legend, I’m suggesting a new passive ability called “Cyber Link.” When Crypto’s drone is actively linked to him — meaning it’s hovering in close proximity — he gains a 25 percent movement speed boost. This buff would allow him to reposition more effectively and stay alive longer in chaotic fights. It wouldn’t make him overpowered, but it would give him the tools to play more dynamically and adapt to changing combat situations.

The drone would need to stay within about five meters of Crypto for the link to remain active. If the drone is destroyed or moves too far away, the speed boost immediately deactivates. To keep this balanced and prevent abuse, the drone would become slightly easier to destroy while it’s in the linked state — possibly through a larger hitbox or more visible targeting indicator. This creates a risk-reward mechanic where Crypto can move faster, but opponents can shut down his buff by shooting the drone.

This change adds depth to Crypto’s gameplay and rewards players who manage their drone skillfully. It doesn’t give him an escape button, but it allows him to keep pace with other legends and survive situations where he’s otherwise helpless. Cyber Link would make Crypto more viable in solo queue and team fights, while still staying true to his methodical and tech-driven playstyle.

Thanks for reading. I hope Respawn and the community consider this suggestion, and I’d love to hear feedback or ways to improve the idea.

  • Also if the community feels this still wouldn’t be balanced enough, he could also give up his “Neurolink” passive ability in order to gain a mobile ability. Respawn has added upgrades so it could be substituted in that way.
