There are a couple of things going on here.
First, as a diamond level player you may feel subjectively like you are outclassed by master and predator players, but statistically speaking you are so close to them in performance that matchmaking will see no difference between you at all. And the 1% have to have someone to play against, after all. And not to put too fine a point on it, but it's pretty much going to be diamond and even high platinum players. Who else is there given the population we currently have?
The quality of squadmates is a different matter. Did they perform like bronze and gold players, or were they high tier players using a secondary? I've found a lot of the latter this season.
In any event, I agree with you that the system absolutely needs to recognize these kinds of mis-matches and it should alter point losses accordingly. Then again, it should also alter them when you beat a squad that you were not expected to beat. So maybe their thinking is that it will all balance out over time without them having to put their thumb on the scale. Couldn't say for sure, but I can say that I've played games where rank points did get buffed and nerfed to take into account the disparities of matchmaking. In the end it made the system even more complicated and it was harder for people to understand the relationship between rank and performance. When it was intended to do just the opposite. Irony.
