It doesn't really work too well though, I believe it procs yellow if they have at least one item gold. 

The hitmarker should indicate that someone is rocking a gold shield (so don't let them get a moment to heal) but also note that headshots are yellow.

If you pop into the firing range with a buddy you can stick on FF, put some shields on and take some shots at each other to get a feel for how shield/location damage hits show up.
