Re: We Need Better Servers

Whats up.You seem quite intelligible so Im going to trust that you can understand what i am going to say.

So, I have been quite frustrated with Apex lag since launch.

ive gone to school for A+ network certification. So, every players console has its own in game timing. Then in the center of all 60 players is the server. Now the further from the server you are, the higher the ping. The higher the ping is, the more delayed your console time is from the actual server. So distance would make sense for lag but, if an local server is lagging as well, then there are a few reasons.

Now, a few times, when Apex was buggy and laggy for me the most, it was when the poles were very active. The sun has been becoming more and more active the last 2.3 years. It is so much more active that, the aurora borealis was down in NORTH AMERICA!Thats half an world away from where it usually is.

Im also on xbox console and i know that xbox has terrible performance but playstation players are perfectly fine. Now, my fps drops to 38 a lot, but that isnt Ea nor Respawn really, fps is how your consoles cpu is handling Apex information. So if my fps is dropping to 38, it is most likely to do with Xbox.

The last little bit of info is that Ea rents servers from a company called Multiplay.Ea is actually said to have been implementing their own server technology into their games.

In a game with gun speeds as fast as the R-99, every milisecond could be that difference.

Like when you closed the door and the bullets still went through. That is an symptom of your ping meeting with an lower ping so on your console it said you closed the door but in real time with the lower ping lifeline, the door was still open.

If you havent done this yet, try forwarding your ports for Apex, i dont know if your pc or console but consoles do better when you forward ips for them too. Also, an firewall might be blogging your connection down.

I hope you resolve this issue because i know as well as any other the need for those authentic, one of a kind adrenaline rushes that only Apex Legends can provide after a long day at work.

@ColinJournalis4u We shouldn't have to port forward or disable a firewall just to play a game. I've also had port forwarded in the past when an EA adviser had said to try doing that. First day doing that, it was great, second day however, it went back to being how it was. No clue if my provider started throttling the connection or what. As for the firewall, I don't like disabling any part of it. The only exception is when you launch a new game and it prompts for permissions to change the firewall. The prompt I'm referring to, is the one where its asking for permission to connect you to other players for online modes. I've already gave Apex permission to function on that level, why does it need more access?

I am also within 100-500 miles of one of the data centers, where I usually get a ping of 23-60 when connected to it. The connection is somehow worse than if I were to connect to a server in Japan, or any other server like the UK. The results of this issue, (besides lagging and such), is that tapping E to pick up multiple items is treated as a held key press, and tapping space to jump, is treated as a "send Valkyrie into fly mode" while playing as Valkyrie. The most annoying part about flying as Valkyrie as well, is that the game can't decide if I should be able to use the ability or not. As it just throws me into the air before snapping me back down to the ground, then letting me fly again, (on repeat). I've died so many times because the game wouldn't let me move. An Ash might as well had threw a bunch of snares at me, because I wasn't going anywhere anyways.

@Midnight9746 You had a very good question related to the firewall. What should one do but to allow firewall passthrough the connections for the game executable?

My connection settings is such that I can get 2 IP addresses from my fiber modem. One IP goes to my home network and the second is assigned directly to my gaming computer and in that gaming computer I allow firewall to give access to Apex executable (RJ45 cable directly from the modem to my gaming PC, optimal as it can be).

That is according to my understanding the most optimal settings I can set up. It gives me 3-4ms ping to google.de -servers and Amsterdam Apex server is 28ms or so(1000M/1000M fiber.) maxming out at a bit over 1000M in real life). But, the game lags still as hell. Its not my GPU, its 4090 and its not my CPU, its fast Amd gaming cpu to support 4090. I can get 300fps most of the time (except during the drop) but still the GAME LAGS. Its like I am half a second behind the game, its like my timing to the servers is off by hundresds of milliseconds. Basically there is zero time to do anything and I am one-clipped to death. That happens usually at te beginning of the season or during the inductions games which set up your baseline (e.g. Arenas).

All indicates that the servers are sub par. Sometimes I get a better gaming experience when gaming at North america servers with ping of about 130ms or so. European servers are museums stuff..

@Salo_MnK Just port forwarded the game ports, following the exact directions given by EA on their support page about it, it made no positive difference in my connection to the server, in fact, it seemed to have made it worse.

port forwarding doesn't impact bandwidth, it only impacts access to the port on the console/PC. That's it.

bandwidth can be impacted by routers in the path, regardless of your physical distance to server.

There are some services that offer high quality routing but you have to buy the service to enjoy the routing.

I live in Africa and have to play on EU servers because we don't have servers here for some reason. Fortnite, PUBG, COD, Battlefield, Overwatch, plus, plus, plus, all have serevrs in Africa and yet APEX has nothing! So we are forced to play on either Belgium or London servers.

I do agree though that the servers this season are really bad and I don't understand why there hasn't been a balancing fix yet.

I used to PING at 165 on Belgium and 166 on London. Now though, London has a PING of 180 and Belgium a PING of 188 consistantly.

Nothing has changed my side. I've checked all my connections and even loaded other games to see how I PING there and nothing has changed from my side. This is definately an APEX issue that is being ignored. I've opened threads on the technical side but nobody responds to it and within a couple of hours its lost on the second page. So yeah, no idea what can be done. Most people play in EU or the US with multiple servers so they don't care when a server goes from 12 to 20.

@MrGreenWithAGun EA support in the past only mentioned port forwarding, they never really talked about routing. Also, I'm not paying for a subscription just to see people cheat in a higher bandwidth.

@Midnight9746, perhaps i didn't say it right. The paid routing, as I understand it, is not higher bandwidth, which is not in need here. They provide a more guaranteed optimal path that ensures higher quality delivery. That is what I have heard in their advertising anyways.

Port forwarding allows a more direct access to the port, not avoid hops, unless it has something to do with EA's network architecture and it eliminates a hop or two by eliminating a relay server or something along that line, not really sure how they designed their network.

But I understand your take on not paying to play against cheaters.    ;P
