Why don't you try Rogue Company with your son? It's an arena shooter and as far as I know it's available for console and MnK. I play a lot of "Strikeout" in PUBS. It's not perfect, but it feels fairer than S17 in Apex (I haven't played Apex since).
Is Rogue Company cross play, or do they separate the two inputs?
According to this website https://crossplaygames.com/games/rogue-company it's crossplay and I believe it is. Anyway, I can't choose a MnK or console lobby or disable crossplay. Unfortunately, the devices (PC or console) are not displayed for the other players.
As I said, it's not perfect and I report any opponent that seems suspicious to me. I think the reporting system is pretty good. The same goes for the option to end the round prematurely by giving up (but only if the majority of your group wants to do so).
Just try it out a few times and give it a real chance. What's the worst that can happen? If you really don't like it, you can delete it again. But if I go by the numbers on Steam charts, a few extra PC players would be nice. 😉
For me, it's a good alternative for now.
