Caustic changes

To make an educated well thought decision on this topic, we need to look at every point. We need to take in his intended purpose, and how we can balance him in the current state of apex. I would like to open this up as a discussion, and not an argument, I would like your honest opinions, ideas and points on what to do with Caustic.

here are some points to look at when thinking of caustic changes:

Big hitbox

Damage from gas

Gas trap format

Gas trap health

Passive(s)

Ultimate range

Passive range

Ultimate damage

Ultimate health

Damage stacking

Gas transparency

Gas slowing

From my pov: Caustic needs a rework

unfortunately I don’t have a solid plan of action, but I know he is not working as of now. As he is the toxic trapper, I want to include these traits in his style and abilities.

Keep in mind this is a rough draft.

Gas traps are smaller (size of base including that red patch)

Gas trap has 150 health

Gas trap can stick to any surface

Gas traps will expand when near caustic, as it would no longer be a useable shield (Having this would eliminate annoying situations where it doesn’t expand in a fast paced fire fight.)

Gas would explode in roughly the same range, but would be slightly directional according to where it was placed.
Gas damage changed from gradually increasing to a constant of 8 damage (I know that looks like a big damage buff, but it’s not, it still takes the same 13 hits to kill someone.

Gas damage does not stack in any way

Caustic no longer scans enemies in gas (barely worked anyway)

Caustic gas transparency stays the same

(Btw new caustic trap does not block doors)

Ultimate:

Caustic gains a temporary speed boost (1.4 speed) gas damage increased to 10 (10 hits to kill) (duration of 30 seconds)

(QoL)

Caustic taps have red and blue color marked to help distinguish the traps (blue as friendly and red as enemy)

Hey man I've only got to time to glance through this, but it looks like you put a lot of thought into this, and some of the items I see you've suggested seem pretty sound.

  • @BigMacAttack8u Wouldn't it be cool to have greater customization?

Just like you can toggle the fire mode of weapons and toggle certain legend ability modes, imagine being able to toggle between several types of traps for Caustic. That way, you could keep enemies guessing.

    Here are a few ideas:

Long-poison, heavy duty barrel. This requires much more work for enemies to destroy, but damage ramps up like currently, starting low and not posing much of a threat if you get out quickly.

Short but lethal barrel: This barrel's damage is roughly double the current peak, only requiring six seconds to down someone. At the same time, it has the same health as current barrels and only releases gas for those six seconds. It's not good for holding a building, but great for discouraging/punishing exploration.

Sticky barrels: Small size, stick to any surface. High initial burst damage (35-50 depending on if the effect from multiple explosions can stack), then low persistent damage, but very small AoE. Mainly good for surprise attacks.

Caustic grenade: Caustic specialty, a combination of a frag grenade and thermite. The explosion radius of a frag grenade but only applies a DoT to players caught in the blast. The DoT bypasses shields completely.

Actually, this may be a cool idea for a separate grenade type in the game.

I don't know if you mentioned this, but for me the biggest fix that could possibly be introduced for Caustic, from the perspective of a non-Caustic player, would be the ability for team mates to be able to distinguish enemy barrels and gas from friendly.  This would greatly increase my attitude about having one on my team.  From where I stand, this problem frequently makes having him in my squad at all a liability, even with voice chat, and causes much suboptimal play on my part and even plenty of unnecessary deaths.  I'd love to actually enjoy having one on my team, for what he brings to the table

  • @BigMacAttack8u That last one would really be helpful especially for my friends as I play more Caustic.

I like the novel ideas but to be honest, Caustic is a bit balanced right now and would only need a small buff. The biggest decision to whether to use the gasman or not is the map.

@LaughingSharko I like all the ideas, but I feel like keeping players guessing would be to much of a buff for caustic, as @Cheese9Man pointed out, he is already pretty ok now, so he should only get a small buff.

@Cheese9Man The suggestion I made is meant to add a little versatility to our gassy boi, eliminating the need to decide based on the map. If you have anything to add that you think would do the job better, I would love to know! 🙂
