Dev update on cheaters and spammers

Hey all, in the blog post last week, I mentioned we’d have an update on anti-cheat for Apex on PC. We’ve got some updated stats and some interesting tidbits on things we’re doing.

We’ve been working closely with key experts across EA including: EA Security and Fraud, the Origin teams, our fellow developers at DICE, FIFA, and Capital Games, in addition to Easy-Anti-Cheat. While we’ve already rolled out several updates (and will be continually doing so for the foreseeable future), others will take time to fully implement.

While we can’t share details on what we’re doing so as to not give a head’s up to the cheat makers, what we can say is that we’re attacking this from every angle, from improvements to detecting cheaters, bolstering resources and tools, to improving processes and other sneaky things to combat sellers and cheaters. We can share some high level stats of progress that’s been made:

  • The recently added in-game reporting tool has had a big impact on discovering new cheats, including previously undetectable cheats that are now being found automatically via EAC

  • Total bans are now at 770K players

  • We have blocked over 300K account creations

  • We have banned over 4,000 cheat seller accounts (spammers) in the last 20 days

  • Total affected matches on PC impacted by cheaters or spammers has been reduced by over half in the last month due to recent efforts

We take cheating in Apex incredibly serious and have a large amount of resources tackling it from a variety of angles. It is a constant war with the cheat makers that we will continue to fight.

We’ll be back next week with an update on another one of the issues called out in last week’s post. In the meantime, there have been a number of reports of the missing close footsteps audio on Reddit. We have only seen a few videos of those situations, so if you could please include video with your post illustrating the issue that will be a big help for us in ensuring we can fix the problem.

Hey all, please do not share links to any cheats you may see as doing so is technically a breach of the AHQ User Rules and Guidelines.

From here on out, any sharing of videos or naming of users and accusing them of cheating or linking to cheating sites will result in bans.

If you are in game and suspect a user of cheating then please report them by following the steps in this link: https://www.easy.ac/en-us/support/apexlegends/contact/report/

We take all reports very seriously and will fully investigate.

    Darko

They won't get rid of the cheaters

They can't afford the screaming in forums and then they would show less players playing and that would make them look bad

Plus those players wont buy skins and crates

Every game since the creation of mankind has had cheats

And every new game says they will have a anti-cheat to protect it's rep and the players

But they never do....and what do WE all do?

We keep buying the new games every time they release them

Can't crack down on the cash cow that is TTV and YT

Those guys have a following and those guys would make EA look and sound like doodoo

  • is this happening any time soon almost every ranked game is a cheater PC

    Legends of the arena,

Respawn touched up on their development surrounding cheating in the game over this past weekend. You can find the full announcement here.

    CHEATING

We know reports of cheaters, especially in Ranked, have been a hot topic so this week we also wanted to provide a little visibility into some of the work that’s been going on behind the scenes to combat cheating:

    • Using machine learning to create behavior models that detect and auto ban cheaters.

    • Requiring TFA in certain regions on high risk accounts.

    • Improving detection that identifies and bans new spam accounts before they are used.

    • Ongoing work to adapt to new cheats.

    • Matchmaking that matches detected cheaters and spammers together.

    • Investigating how people party up for matches. Even if you are not specifically using a cheat, partying up with cheaters is still cheating.

    • Increasing resources whether that be people or tech.

As we’ve said before, the war against cheaters will be ongoing and remains a high priority for us. There will always be work to do, improvements to make, and new things to adapt to. We’d like to thank the players that have been getting involved with helping us squash cheaters over the last week whether it be submitting reports or assisting with the vetting process for suspicious behavior.

If you encounter a cheater you can report them here. If you can please try to capture video proof as well.

Understand that we are not going to discuss the details of a specific ban with players on any public forums. If you feel that you have been wrongly banned you can appeal it here.

Interesting... hope "innocent" players who just get paired with cheaters are not blamed! 😃

"Using machine learning to create behavior models that detect and auto ban cheaters."

Nice! I saw in some cheating forums that there's already an ongoing AI aimbot/cheating project.

Looks like this problem will be decided by who wins the AI war 🤐

@Bubbacs They could if they pushed the right agenda and there was no other choice for the cheating players that do love this game. They can always choose to stop using it. Fortnite, OW, CS have gotten to a place where almost all players aren't. Maybe there was that time last season to.. consider cheaters' feelings and also give them a chance for change but there will also be a time where they're just abusing the system completely. They passed that point already and now that there's ranked.. I think everyone is on the same page and we don't want to revisit or have to address this topic anymore.

  • i wrote about how bots could be used, i said keep them invisible and then watch the hackers with esp to see if they see the invisible bots through walls.

but thats hard, the logic is hard. one way that might be easier is to identify hackers first then send in some bots to fight them. there must be a chart of stats available that shows the shots fired, the kills, the missed shots, thats one chart.

then give bots to normal players to fight against. again another chart is made.

and it might be the bots win the game but then thats the price the game pays to find out hackers.

the bots have in game sense to find hackers, go straight to them, build the chart.

one particular good way to find a use for the chart is to find the average over numerous charts to see the hacker have repeated similar chart results while a normal player would not hAVE THE SAME CHART RESULTS. the chart being an identifier is they're always the same chart for hacker behavior.

to build a good number of charts for hackers throw in 10 bot teams they have walls and hide from good teams and run towards bad teams.

So, is this the update on the Cheating issues that you said you would have for us 1 week after your original post back at the start of May ?

    I quote from that post:

"We’ll be back next week with an update on another one of the issues called out in last week’s post".

Well, at least we got an update, even if it is 2 months late, rite boiz?

A couple of questions for you then, @EA_David / @EA_Blueberry / @anyone@EA :  (except for that guy who doesn't like me speaking.. Darko ?) 😛

I quote your latest post: "Requiring TFA in certain regions on high risk accounts.".

I'm assuming you mean 2 Factor Authentication - we all know that as 2FA. It is OK, you can call it that without sounding like the people that made forknife.

The question here is, why not just make 2FA a requirement globally? Why pick on specific countries? There are cheaters everywhere, globally. Why limit the use of the best anti-cheat tool ever? (Don't tell me China isn't getting 2FA... If they aren't getting it, don't bother at all, there's no point..)

I quote your latest post: "Ongoing work to adapt to new cheats."

Are workers at EA/Respawn/EAC incapable of going on the internet, and buying the latest cheats for Apex, so you can reverse engineer them? Would this not be beneficial?

I quote your latest post: "Matchmaking that matches detected cheaters and spammers together."

What the hell? Aren't you meant to be getting rid of cheaters and spammers? That would mean banning them. Why are you giving them a platform now? Doesn't giving them a platform allow them to work out your Anti-Cheat system better, so they don't end up segregated? Doesn't it mean they get to keep playing, and making their cheats better? This seems absolutely crazy.

I quote your latest post: "Investigating how people party up for matches. Even if you are not specifically using a cheat, partying up with cheaters is still cheating."

Aren't you people making the huge assumption here that EVERY legit non-cheating player *knows* whether the other people they are playing with are or are not cheating? How are we meant to know that?

    [Removed by CM]

End of story. It's not OUR job to know the difference. It's Respawn/EA/EAC's job to weed out the cheaters. If you do enough of that, legit players wont be playing with cheaters, because there won't be any! (or extremely few).

If you want to catch a bunch of cheaters all at once, why not put all the Streamers together from TTV, Douyu, etc? They are pretty easy to find based on their player name, as already suggested in this forum

I quote your latest post: "If you encounter a cheater you can report them here. If you can please try to capture video proof as well."

Dude, there is still no place to upload video proof. Why is this just limited to those people who can afford to have streaming gear and host their own videos? We should be able to upload video proof directly.

In summary, I am asking questions because I am a keen player of the game. I don't want to give it up, and I want to fight for it to stay around. Apex is a great game. It's not worth playing with the cheaters though. I have put my best foot forward in this post - meaning that I am hoping for actual replies this time, and not deletion. Please talk to me directly if there is anything wrong with the way I have asked these questions, so we can mediate an outcome, instead of striking me. Everyone deserves answers to these questions.

    Yours Sincerely,

    L

  • More than a year gone, and the problem persists!!

maybe invest more people into this? It is getting ridiculous
